The mid-term election is 8 weeks away. The administration is low in the polls.

I'm not cynical enough to think the administration is planning an October Surprise, but am a little bit apprehensive about it. What about you?

It's also possible that the bad guys are planning a big strike somewhere. I'm pretty sure they want to keep the extremist Republicans in power since that benefits them.

What worries me most is the possibility of another round on one of the social issues...some conservative judge somewhere delivering a controversial decision on abortion, school prayer, gay marriage, whatever and stirring up the forces of darkness in order to get them hot to trot on Election Day.

I don't think they would be dumb enough to start another international conflict.

They will probably just exploit one of their three main core issued God, Guns and Gays. That always gets their base rilled up.

I have no doubt in my mind there will be an October surprise. In fact, the September suprise has already dropped with the airing of "the path to 9/11 on ABC. It's amazing what the Republicans will do to politicize 9/11.

Bush may be confident that they'll hold the House and Senate so his administration has a rubber stamp congress, but in priviate I'd bet you he's singing a diffrent story.

If he loses one of the two it will make it near impossible for him to push his agenda for the next two years. If he loses both, he's essentially a lame duck president (not that he wasn't already lame to begin with)

Good call on that one. I'd miss that.

Or maybe an impeached president. Then his goose will really be cooked. Then he could be tried for at least one felony and fitted for that orange jump suit he so richly deserves.

I wish that would happen, but since Republicans control the House it's pretty much impossible. At the end of the day they'll protect one of their own.

Maybe there is an October Surprise coming ( the Plan Bers are getting a little nervous about losing the Congress, no? ) :

What Would War Look Like?

The first message was routine enough: a "Prepare to Deploy" order sent through naval communications channels to a submarine, an Aegis-class cruiser, two minesweepers and two mine hunters. The orders didn't actually command the ships out of port; they just said to be ready to move by Oct. 1. But inside the Navy those messages generated more buzz than usual last week when a second request, from the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO), asked for fresh eyes on long-standing U.S. plans to blockade two Iranian oil ports on the Persian Gulf. The CNO had asked for a rundown on how a blockade of those strategic targets might work. When he didn't like the analysis he received, he ordered his troops to work the lash up once again.

What's going on? The two orders offered tantalizing clues. There are only a few places in the world where minesweepers top the list of U.S. naval requirements. And every sailor, petroleum engineer and hedge-fund manager knows the name of the most important: the Strait of Hormuz, the 20-mile-wide bottleneck in the Persian Gulf through which roughly 40% of the world's oil needs to pass each day. Coupled with the CNO's request for a blockade review, a deployment of minesweepers to the west coast of Iran would seem to suggest that a much discussed--but until now largely theoretical--prospect has become real: that the U.S. may be preparing for war with Iran.

No one knows whether--let alone when--a military confrontation with Tehran will come to pass. The fact that admirals are reviewing plans for blockades is hardly proof of their intentions. The U.S. military routinely makes plans for scores of scenarios, the vast majority of which will never be put into practice. "Planners always plan," says a Pentagon official. Asked about the orders, a second official said only that the Navy is stepping up its "listening and learning" in the Persian Gulf but nothing more--a prudent step, he added, after Iran tested surface-to-ship missiles there in August during a two-week military exercise. And yet from the State Department to the White House to the highest reaches of the military command, there is a growing sense that a showdown with Iran--over its suspected quest for nuclear weapons, its threats against Israel and its bid for dominance of the world's richest oil region--may be impossible to avoid. The chief of the U.S. Central Command (Centcom), General John Abizaid, has called a commanders conference for later this month in the Persian Gulf--sessions he holds at least quarterly--and Iran is on the agenda.

War Signals?
Dave Lindorff

As reports circulate of a sharp debate within the White House over possible US military action against Iran and its nuclear enrichment facilities, The Nation has learned that the Bush Administration and the Pentagon have moved up the deployment of a major "strike group" of ships, including the nuclear aircraft carrier Eisenhower as well as a cruiser, destroyer, frigate, submarine escort and supply ship, to head for the Persian Gulf, just off Iran's western coast. This information follows a report in the current issue of Time magazine, both online and in print, that a group of ships capable of mining harbors has received orders to be ready to sail for the Persian Gulf by October 1.

I have no doubt that the Rep. can hold both houses by merely creating more, "rally around the president" , fear and forever US.

What I think is the real issue is, is how the media is in the belly of the Republicans. Mainstream media. The above is one thing but there are many other tell tale signs. Larry King lining up "insightful" interviews, etc....etc......

I was watching ABC this morning, par hazard, by chance and they gave 2 full minutes to a father who lost a child in Columbine. So far Ok. Given the Amish murders, ok. But the guy went on for the 2 min. to ONLY say that America had become soft on crime, America had become God less and immoral and that we must begin today, to straighten it out.

Ok. I think the guy has the right to his opinion . BUT journalistic standards not even suggest, but demand, that a countervailing opinion be aired in the same time slot. None was forthcoming and no disclaimer but the title of his speech, FREE SPEECH. I find this pretty tainted and shows how at bottom, mainstream American media has bought the soul of main stream Americans with (whose $$$$$).

Pitiful and the question is -- will America be able to see the trees for the forest? I think not.

The answer to the OP is: Yes.

Apparently, Kim Jung Il was reading this forum. Who'd 'a thunk he was a Republican?
