|
|
Hi everyone,
I am a newbie here in South Korea. I have been working here for two months. I work for a small Hagwon where I am the only teacher. I am in a small town with little contact with other foreigners so I am not sure what is right or not.
Currently I work every day from 12 until 10 at night. My boss has recently asked me to teach her nephew half an hour in the morning two days a week and to teach her 2 hours extra on top of this a week as well. She has offered to pay me 100, 000 won extra a month for this.
Our contract states 30 hours per week. My actual class time is a little over 30 hours per week. Yet, my actual work time is more like 45 to 50 hours per week due to driving. I work at 5 different places and must drive from one class to the next.
She says driving time does not count and that I should be able to relax in the car.
Actually I am feeling exhausted and stressed because of not having any time to relax.
Also, on another topic where can I look for the breakdown of the taxes I should be paying? I know this was brought up other places, I just didn't understand the clear breakdown.
Thanks so much for any thoughts or ideas! |

| Do you have all the locations to which you drive added to your ARC? |

Yes, by Korean law you must have ALL of your places of employment registered with the immigration dept (and printed clearly on your Alien Card). If not, then you are working illegally and are facing fines and deportation if caught by immigration. I was/am in a similar bind with my Hagwon.
"You should be able to relax in the car" is bollocks, quite frankly From what I've seen, many shady, small-time hagwon directors will adopt an attitude of "Oh, you so rucky misser white man. I juss poor Korean. You no comprain!" Don't feel that you need to go along with this... |

I think you need to draw the lady a pie chart or something and demonstrate how much of YOUR time she is wasting by having you run around all over the place. When you are driving you are not relaxing, reading a book, shopping, cooking or anything else that you need to do.
Maybe she shouldn't have to pay full-time wages for the driving time, but she should have to compensate you some.
Are you saying that you are at work 10 hours a day but only being paid for 6? |

actually that's 3 hours a week (isn't it?), so 12 hours a month. So she's paying you what, a generous 8,000 per hour? Where are you working, Lotteria? Just say no. Overtime should be a minimum 25,000. I don't know what your contracts reads, but I have to assume it's more than 8,000.
So you're working 10 hours a day?! Every day?! Most hagwon jockeys are working 6-7 hours, you realise? Unless you are earning a good 3 million per month your hours are absurd.
Driving is relaxing time? Ha ha ha. There truly is no end to the comedy with hagwon owners. |

This is the most important question. If you are not registered with Immigration to work at all of these different locations, you're working illegally and running the risk of being fined and/or deported.
If that's the case, you need to refuse to do this any longer starting NOW. |

You are new here...that rate of pay flat out SUCKS!!! I wouldn't consider it even if the student came to my house. You should be getting 500,000 - 600,000 for that...bro.... |

Oh yeah, oops.. you're right, it's 3 hours a week.. but still - he should be getting at least an extra 75k won a week for that rather than the pitiful 100k a month she's tossing at him. |

Word!
You are being used very badly - even when nearly-jaded or almost cynical forks like me take the defacto "standards" of the Korean private language scam thingy into consideration.
By the way, how many posters feel that Wonderland-uhs, in general, offer a much better deal?
You must be congratulated for having the balls and patience to work for this thing. At the very least, you deserve a year's worth of free hotel lodging and meals in The Charles Hotel in Cambridge.
God bless you, and take care.
