Does anyone else who works at a combined middle / high school get this:
It's high school chosing time for grade 3 MS students, and high schools in areas suffering from urban flight are well aware of declining enrollment. So, if the waegook works both, the HS teachers get him to try to persuade the brighter grade 3 MS students to stay instead of going to a school in the big city. I've had this happen a number of times lately. What I tell them (which is true) is that the CSAT exam is becomming less important and grades relative to other students are becomming more important, so if they stay, they have a much better chance at finishing in the top 10%, so they should ask their parents to keep them here. Ergo, you should go to a school that's as average as they come instead of going to a really good one if you want to go to a good university.
Of course the real reason is that I don't want to lose all my best students next year. |

Doesn't that describe the 90 percent of the Korean University system as well. |
