Next week I will teach a class called "What is beauty?"
For that I need some before and after pictures of Korean girls/ladies/women wearing makeup and some before and after pictures of those who have had plastic surgery.
I don't know where to look for those pictures,
Do you? |

How many 20-something K-girls work at your school? You might need only take a camera to the staff room. |

Seriously?
There is this wonderful thing called The Internet. It is made up of tubes that stuff goes through. If you go to google.com and type korean woman plastic surgery, or Miss Korea, and/or another combination of similar words balls will start to roll through the tubes. Eventually the information will appear on your screen. |

This all seems like a very narrow conception of "beauty"...surely you can make the lesson more interesting by introducing other ideas of beauty than merely the most idealised/common? |

Like how here in Korea I have such a big, sexy 'high nose'. |

Recently a friend showed me a bunch of letters his middle school students wrote, addressed to an imaginary pen pal. Almost all of the girls wrote "I'm a very pretty girl!" Most American kids would never write something like that. I'm curious about the class you'll be teaching. What's the angle? Context? |

Yu Bum Suk= Thanks, that's a great idea. I think I will do that tomorrow.
Tzechuk= Thanks for the help but I'm looking for Korean girls/ladies/women.
Flint= Thanks for the reminder. My head has been in the clouds lately and I forgot to try Google.
Butlerian= Thanks, that's a great idea. I think I will look into inner beauty. Is that what you mean?
CBP= The angle and context are that every person in the world has their own idea of beauty and many times two people will disagree with each other.
There are times when a woman is considered beautiful by many but she does not consider herself beautiful and chooses to have plastic surgery and the same people will say she is no longer beautiful.
Also, the importance of appearance and the effects on a person's life. |

I'm curious as well. How did this unfold? Interested in the outcome. And, CBP, clearly I'm not the only one here old enough to recall George Burns. Here's another of his: 'Happiness is a warm, loving, caring family--in another city.' |

Ed, it sounds like you've got the makings for a great discussion on beauty. It's got the wheels churning. Thanks for the inspiration.
(I'm not THAT old -- although my mother is fond of reminding me that I'll be forty in less than four years -- but I love George Burns!)
Cheers! |
