Cleric 'meat' remarks spark fury

SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- Australia's most prominent Islamic cleric will not give sermons for two or three months, but will not face censure from his mosque for a sermon comparing women who do not wear head scarves to "uncovered meat," the mosque's spokesman said Friday.

The board of the Lakemba Mosque Association met late Thursday with Sheik Taj Aldin al Hilali and decided afterward to accept his apology for the comments, which triggered a storm of protest.

Association president Toufic Zreika said the board was "basically satisfied with the notion that certain statements made by the mufti was misrepresented and the mufti was misinterpreted."

[I do not believe he was misinterpreted. He spoke of someone going to jail for 65 years. You do not go to jail in Australia for infidelity. I think he is lying to protect himself. I do think it is positive that his community suspended him.]

That's absurd, he was not misrepresented. It's disappointing he will not be censured. He deserves it, and not doing it will worsen public opinion toward Islam.

This is being treated as if it is an isolated incident and in no way indicative of mainstream opinions help by muslim men the world over, which, undoubtedly, it is.

This guy said what he said because he felt comfortable saying it (and in public, none the less!). He knew that the vast majority of people in the room would agree as, I'm sure, they have all spoken of it many times. What he did not anticipate is that the media is starting to get wise to them, and is reporting what they say to an increasingly intolerant and islam-fatigued West.

But I have faith in the muslims. They will do something so dumb that even the most guilt-ridden white post-Christians won't be able to deny their nazi-ish ideas anymore.

I just read about this case this a.m. in a Canadian newspaper. Westerners are taking these sorts of Islamist statements by Muslim clerics too seriously. There is far too much anxiety in the west and an extraordinary lack of confidence in core western values. Sheik Taj Aldin al Hilali simply needs to be deported to the third world sh*t-pit from which he sprang. End of problem.
