Palestinian gays flee to Israel

A number of gay Palestinian men are risking their lives to cross the border into Israel, claiming they feel safer among Israelis than their own people.

According to some estimates, there are now 300 gay Palestinian men secretly living and working in Israel.

Their willingness to live there - despite the risk of being detained and deported as a security threat - is due to Palestinian attitudes towards gay men, they claim.

One 22-year-old gay man who fled from Gaza into Israel four years ago told BBC World Service's Outlook programme he was almost killed when his family found out about his sexuality.

He says that when he was 18, he was caught with his boyfriend by his brother.

"[My brother] brought a stick and hit us," he said. "He tied us up with an iron rope and went to call my dad, and tell my partner's. Then he came back and hit us again."

Interesting that the evil Zionists are not stoning them to death...

And what exactly are you trying to say here?

-- that Israelis are "gay" loving Zionists?
-- that the dogs of Palestine will be fleeing next?
-- Oh! that all Muslims hate gays! I get it!

This kind of post is just too typical. Someone takes a news item, written by a journalist to fill their weekly quota, about some small perspective.

Next, someone posts it, or reads it somewhere in their livingroom and begins to believe ALL of any particular kind of people mentioned, are hateful, raving maniacs.

No perspective, no insight into the human condition. Just a snowball thrown in the air that unfortunately doesn't melt fast enough.

DD

PS. I can bet that gays in Palestine flee for a variety of reasons. There are gay bashers, there is gay hatred, in any society. Tolerance too....

My last coworker was very, very gay and had many boyfriends while in the Middle East (Egytp, UAE and another one). Still, even there, he said while he was never worried, though he kept it discreet enough, the Middle Easterners always worried about it coming out. They might not go around killing people, but it is still very, very bad there for them.

It's a good thing that would never happen in places the US has 'liberated', like Afghanistan or Iraq.

Finally we agree dd.

Your typical "palestinian" is as progressive as your typical Klansman, and as deserving of support.

This could be anywhere in our "Christian " or half "Christian " world . Birmingham , Buffalo, Novisibirsk, Newtonville, Darwin or Dieppe............. Not a lot of tolerance anywhere in the world and despite progress, there is still a long gap between legislation and each person's notion of LOVE.

You are saying that the situation for gays in Buffalo and Gaza are equal?

Back home there are gay bars all over the place. Gay sitcoms, etc etc. Things sure as hell ain't perfect, and in a few areas there is actually a chance of physical violence, but comparing the two is ludicrous, and I am hoping you will either retract that statement or explain how I misunderstood such a naive statement. And you know I ain't one of the anti-muslim freaks on this forum, as I have shot them down for ignorant anti-muslim statements.
