http://youtube.com/watch?v=yuGfY9WtzKM&mode=related&search=common sense dictates that I'd have to give Jerry Douglas
"Best Slide guitar" player in the world. This video doesn't really do him justice but listen to the start and again at 2:35
Woodhttp://youtube.com/watch?v=icMTVV5Lwaw&mode=related&search=This is the same song as the "best banjo nomination" but it has a wide variety of instruments in it. For Jerry Douglas, go to 2:45. I REALLY wish he was ALWAYS mixed better but the high end stuff would be too piercing; it just makes it REALLY hard to pick up the fast low end stuff.
The other video of a song he wrote, the song sucks so bad I can't put it up...but damn...that guy PILLAGES the instrument.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=rrlqQ1_vZVEI put this up in the "best of youtube" thread...
SO...I'm going to suggest that, if banjo ain't really your thing...fast forward to about 1:45...paul shaeffer is just finishing up. The next banjo solo fella will/should blow you away.
"Best banjo player in the world" goes to Charlie |

Stevie Wonder? Really?
huh.
I would give "Best Female Vocal" to Ella Fitzgerald though it is kind of an easy copout. |

Indeed. Jazzhead's back in the day when arguing a similar topic such as this would ask the question "Who's the best female vocalist who's not Ella?". |

Several great players here. Chambers is the man of all drummers. Check it out from 45" and the look at 2:24. Trying hard to leave each other in time... |

I hate to say it but...that kind of music is the reason I DON'T like modern jazz.... |

I have a friend with the musical sense of a fry pan who says that that kind of music is background music for pron films.
Anyways, Chambers was a later influence for me, but only his chops. He has great feel and style, but he is a bit too much like a machine for my tastes.
Another good clip, but this time a solo.

People are not only disinterested by modern jazz, but overwhelmed by it as well. It's not for the feint of heart and takes a real musicians' musician to play it. I find that playing modern jazz like getting lost in a cave...it has a beginning and an end, but one isn't quite sure where it is, nor of one's footsteps along the way. Fun, but very challenging. |

Real men play fretless.
Wooten is a great player, but like Chambers on drums, a bit to mechanical for many. Jaco had real style. |

Mechanical???
Okay, I waited a few seconds to let it sink in..
So
I had a feeling someone would-- mechanical???
Sorry about that. As I was saying, I had a feeling someone would post some mediocre bass performance in a bid to one-up Wooten. Victor farts more interesting riffs than that vid you linked. Playing a fretless bass? Not impressive at all. |
