The Canadian government said on Tuesday it was most unhappy that a U.S. judge had sentenced a sex offender to a three-year term of "exile" in Canada rather than a jail sentence at home.
The New York state judge accepted a proposal from former teacher Malcolm Watson, 35 -- convicted of having sex with a 15-year-old girl -- that he be allowed to live in Canada on probation and not spend time in a U.S. jail.
Watson, a U.S. citizen, lives in the town of Fort Erie, Ontario, with his wife and children. He had commuted to work at a girls' school in nearby Buffalo, New York.
The U.S. judge ruled Watson can return to the United States only to report to his parole officer.
"I was infuriated to see an American court decision deporting an American citizen back to my constituency," said government minister Rob Nicholson, who represents the electoral district in southern Ontario near Niagara Falls where Fort Erie is located.
Canadian officials are looking into whether they can deport Watson, who has permission to live and work in Canada.
Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty called on Ottawa on Tuesday to have the U.S. decision overturned.
"I hope that we are of one mind in this regard so that we don't become some kind of a dumping ground for convicted offenders," McGuinty told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp.
"It's obviously not the kind of precedent that we want to allow the Americans to establish and it's not the kind of thing we're prepared to accept," he said.
A U.S. embassy spokesman in Ottawa said he could not comment on the case.
U.S. authorities say Watson's relationship with the 15-year-old was consensual. The age of consent in Canada is 14, compared with 17 in New York state.

| There is something odd about this story. I get the feeling something important is missing. |

| 35 year old man shagging a 15 year old....I don't care what anyone says...he's a sick puppy. Any guy over 18 should not be messing with any gal under 18. If you can't control your urges and look for someone legal....you need to have your nuts cut off. |

That sucks for guys who are 19 and their girlfriends are 17 which is ultra common. Legal in Canada is over 14. |

that probably had something to do with the sentence.

In Canada she WAS legal though.
But now the Conservatives have raised it to 16 which I think is better (not a whole lot but better than 14) |

The guy is American, living in Canada but working in the US. Right?
Where is the girl from? Is she American or Canadian (or other)?
Where was the crime committed? Did the guy screw one of his students at the girls school where he teaches? Did he pick up an underage Canadian girl and bring her across the border?
Another thing: What is exile? I know it used to be used, but as far as I know, you can't exile one of your own citizens. You can bring charges against them and threaten them with prosecution if they return, leaving them, in effect, in exile. But that is not the same thing as dragging them in chains to the border and tossing them out. |

Try to tell that to the billion plus Muslims who worship the Prophet Mohammed. |

| The man was an American who worked in the US at a school but travelled back and forth because his Canadian wife and kids (?) lived in Canada. He had consensual sex with one of his students but under the law it was not consensual because he was in a position of authority (raises the age of consent). He was tried in the US but he requested and was granted (with blessings from the girl's family) to serve his probation in Canada to be closer to his family. He was not exiled. He is not a pedophile. The only thing the Conservatives should be upset about is if the cost of probation is past on to Canada. |

very misleading title for this thread related to the article.
its a local new york state court case.. one case.
the title thread alludes to some large U.S. government greater conspiracy or major international political maneuver. |

It's not just the thread title, it's a whole bunch of brainless Canadian politicians as well, not to mention the media. |
