I found a site which offers free downloads of their own office software. It's basically a free alternative to Microsoft Office. It does exactly the same things (word processor, spreadsheets.....) Works great.
Also using such software helps, in a small way, to wrestle control of computing from the present virtual monopoly

doesn't open publisher files, but if you don't want to use publisher files I suppose it would be okay.

For clarification you do not have to subscribe to the google docs service to use openoffice nor download it from Google. Although google distributes their own version openoffice is its own thing. -Jeff

I didnt know google is distributing an office suite!? I doubt it?

If one is online most times, these online apps should suffice unless you do some tricky stuff with your presentations or sheets or documents, in which case they will not be at par with installed apps eg. OOo, MSOffice, or StarOffice etc.

For Zoho, there's no need to subscribe as well - just load the page, choose your app and start working AND no need to download/install a 90+MB software. I've been trying/testing Zoho for sometime now and I'm impressed with their efforts.

For zoho writer, you could 'save' (read export) your work in various formats - doc/odt/pdf/sxw/rtf/txt/html - on your hard disk or if you sign-up (also free) then you could also save it with them.

There another app called Ajaxwrite but its a bit buggy.
