One shot, chased immediately with water. Almost exclusively with meat.

To get rid of the hangover: kimchi mandu. Or pig-spine soup. Or lotteria fries (curses, i've no macdonalds, burger king, or kfc within a 100km radius).

Most of the time, just one shot - nothing else. However, I do find it to be pretty tasty mixed with aloe juice. Its also a good marinade for raw chicken if you mix it with soy sauce. And, if you leave the cap off for 2 to 3 days, it also becomes an excellent cleaning fluid.

When eating Korean food, then just straight. At home in the evening, if I want a drink, I usually mix a little Coke in it.

I would say after half a bottle of soju, taste becomes tolerable. So, my advice is to go beyond that point and then continue to 2nd, 3rd, etc bottle.

However, I noticed that if I do not drink soju for a few months and then I drink it - there is usually no hangover the next day. If I drink several bottles daily, hangovers are bad. I really wonder what chemicals they put into it....since with high quality whiskey/vodtka/rum (not the $9.99/1 liter type) I never ever had problems the next day. I can drink half a bottle of whiskey and all is well....or recently 1-2 bottles of soju and I'll be throwing up the next 24 hours (whereas 2 years ago soju was OK).

Thus: Its cheaper than water, gets you drunk, but hurts you in the long run and life is too long for that.

P.S It was much easier to hook up with chicks when both of us were drinking soju than without....

All depends on the situation/occasion. If I'm eating sangyeopsal or galbi, for example, straight soju usually goes down well. At home or in a bar/club, after a few beers then soju tastes better as my mouth will be slightly more numb by that point. At home, I usually mix the soju, and what I mix it with depends on how lazy I am. If I'm lazy, coke will do, but if I've got more energy I'll blend some fruit - kiwi is good - and mix that with the soju. Poktanju is another option (glass of beer with a soju glass literally dropped in), but as I particularly enjoy the taste of beer I usually prefer to drink one after the other rather than mix them together.

I take it with about a 1:3 or 1:4 mixture with orange juice. It's also OK with canned coffee.

1 part of soju to 3/4 parts of orange juice or opposite?

For me, even few drops of orange juice masks the taste so its OK. But I would prefer bokbunja.

My Korean coworkers showed me their way last night. That is to mix 1/3rd soju with 2/3rds maekju and drink it in one shot. I think I did that a few times too many last night though, as its hard to think today.

I like chasing it with beer. That way it's like whisky for poor people.

3 or 4 parts OJ.

At a staff piss up once some Korean teachers brought along a big bottle of cognac. When it was about 4/5 empty they poured in soju, Coca-cola and beer and then put the cap back on and shook it all up. I declined.

At a galbi joint or with coworkers, one shot.

At home, mixed with peach Coolpis and sprite...just like the kettles they serve at Polly's, except you don't have to deal with the lower rungs of the expat community and the jacked-up turboskank zombie $lut$ they're all desperately chasing.
