I don't have my job yet, so maybe this will become self-evident, but is there a way to check on the following things:
-Enrollment in National Health Insurance
-Enrollment in National Pension
I am hoping I won't get to the question of what to do if you find out you aren't enrolled.
Thanks! |

When you get the interview with the employer ask for the e-mails of a couple of the current teachers. ASK them flat out if they are enrolled.
If the school gives you the e-mails of a couple of newbie teachers who have NOT been there long enough to be enrolled yet, ask THEM (the newbie teachers) for the e-mail of some of the longer term teachers and ASK them.
Don't be shy about asking. They are YOUR MONEY and YOUR BENEFITS in or out of YOUR pocket. If you are shy about asking you can expect to get burned.
Oh, and there is NO other way to find out in advance. |

Thanks Ttom,
I have gone on about 10 interviews and pretty much the best I have turned up in terms of the national health insurance and pension is, "we can do that if you want."
Most teachers seem totally confused by the particulars, even the vets. One teacher who did the initial interview because he has been there for several years wasn't sure if he had health insurance or not.
It is similar with the directors and owners. I can't tell if when they say they don't know something if they are trying to hide the fact they are ripping me off, or are legitimately clueless.
Pretty much I think I am going to one that has gotten positive reviews from the teachers and has insurance in the contract and is willing to include pension and hoping for the best.
I am planning to try and check it once I do take a job. Not that I would know what to do if they turned out to be ripping me off ... maybe approach it like, "Oh, there seems to be a mistake."
I dunno ... thanks again for the reply! |

It's not optional in most cases. I wouldn't want to work for anyone that didn't realize that or wanted to get around it. |

Then he's an idiot. When you are enrolled in the national health program, you will be given a little booklet (a little bigger than card size) that you take with you when you visit a doctor or health clinic. If you don't receive this booklet, it is probably because you're not enrolled. It is manditory to be enrolled, not an option.

Go with your gut feeling. Do you really think that these bosses have no idea about what is expected, ie. taxes, health insurance, pension? Please.
Serveral years ago I had an interview at a crap hogwon. The toilet paper (aka contract) the owner showed me had a tax clause that stated a 5% tax rate. I asked and he said 3.3% was income tax and the rest was VAT. I got up and walked out. He knew damn well what was expected of him. He just wanted to pay me as little as possible and assumed that I was either broke and desperate or clueless.
If you get the same gut feeling, walk away. It will only get worse over the course of your contract. |

My boss took my passport and ARC card to enrol me in the health insurance plan. I got them both back within the week. About a week later he gave me a little white booklet which was for the health insurance, and then told me I was automatically signed up for pension as well seeing as they are both national plans.
My friends are told they have insurance but dont have a booklet. They pay full fees and are supposedly reimbursed at the end of their contract. Sounds shady if you ask me! |

If you are in the pension plan you get a statement once a year that shows the contributions to your account in the past 12 months.
I got mine in September. I have heard that some people got their statements around mid Oct. but I suspect the delay was between the boss and the worker and not the postal system.
If your friends are in the medical system they will have the booklet.
No booklet = no medical or pension. There is no reimbursement at the end of the contract. That is shady indeed. |
