I think it's better than most K-commercials. It makes me feel very patriotic and very informative sometimes.

I also prefer the AFN spots much more than the Korean commericals. The only AFN spot that I REALLY hate is the one with the woman talking about identity theft! "She called the cops and then just sat back and waited." Drives me to drink...

I barely watch AFN now as the AFN I get hardly shows sports. The USFK added more channels, AFN sports being one of them, and thus AFN Prime, which I get, is left with just a mediocre college football game here and there.

I miss seeing shows only a week later instead of 6 months later. Danged US military gotta get AFN in Gwangju!!

...oh, and the commercials are an added bonus. Not that I necessarily enjoy the AFN commercials, but at least there are no bloody "Le-le-lemona-du" guys. Grrrr... I hate those guys.

General LaPorte has retired, his 4 years here were the longest of any CINC. Though from what I heard he was not well liked by the GIs. Who I miss is General Schwartz, his "cinc huddles" were a scream, he sounded like Mr Rogers.

Now we got Gen Bell with his "under the oak tree counselling" are there oak trees in Korea?

I really miss Jan, those "what happened to Jan" spots were so funny

Yeah each CINC has their own unique style. Bell right now has been very low key. Funny thing is Schwartz was the first one to be on AFN a lot. I dont recall seeing the other ones on a lot back in the 90's. Schwatrz's style was made for tv

I think it was Gen Campbell LaPorte's #2 that made "listen up" so prevelent. He was an interesting study in personna. I've only seen the current #2 do 1 spot. Seems like Bell wants the non-coms in charge to do most of the talking though he is following LaPorte's Gachi Gapshida message

We had both of those Generals when I was stationed at Ft Hood. LaPorte was an a--hole and Schwartz was well-liked. Schwartz did about as much as any General does, these days, for lower enlisted soldiers. It wasn't much, but most Generals care more about playing golf than about lower enlisted soldiers.

I thank God daily that I no longer have to put up with the tripe on AFN. Even when I was able to receive the AFN signal, I avoided it like the plague unless I was out of soju and wanted to feel my brain cells shrivelling and dying. I'd rather have my tongue beaten wafer thin by a steak tenderizer, and then stapled to the floor with a croquet hoop than put up with its cretinous putresence again.

Gen Bell is here for one reason only! He is here to supervisor the withdraw of the US troops from Korea. Of course not of the troops will be leaving Korea. It is believed that about 5 to 7 thousand troops will be left after he leaves Korea. Thats what he did in Germany and now thats why he is here. Say goodbye as the troops go marching home.
BTW, you may also say goodbye to several hundred ESL jobs too.

AFN used to run more "history moments" and things like that. Or so my fuzzy memory tells me. But the AFN commercials are pretty hep.
