'Jelly bellies' memo costs police chief his job
Quote: |
In his memo, titled "Are You a Jelly Belly," the chief never singled anyone out, and apart from the title, didn't call anyone names.
Instead, he provided a list of 10 reasons police officers should be in shape. He said overweight police poorly represent the profession, poop out when chasing suspects and might have to resort to "a higher level of force" if a criminal got the upper hand in a fight. He said out-of-shape cops are a liability to the city and their families.
"Take a good look at yourself," he wrote. "If you are unfit, do yourself and everyone else a favor. See a professional about a proper diet and a fitness training program, quit smoking, limit alcohol intake and start thinking self-pride, confidence and respectability. And stop making excuses for delaying what you know you should have been doing years ago. We didn't hire you unfit and we don't want you working unfit. Don't mean to offend, this is just straight talk. I owe it to you." |

Here's an idea, why don't they have regular fitness checks as part of being a cop |

That very thing crosses my mind when I see the rather robust beat officers when I am in London.
I always wonder how they are going to run after and catch a shoplifter etc with their extra tyres.

Nah, they can just shoot the crook when he runs. Wait, hold on.. they could throw the baton and try to trip the escapee. Do they have bolos? |

But that would be an attack on their right to be happy as they are. |

A survey should be done asking on-the-beat police officers how many times they have ever had to put their physical fitness to the test in apprehending or subduing somebody while on the job. |
Well there you go......
Why not act on the belief that as cops...one day...they will have to chase someone down and hence should be in shape. |

I don't know how fatties can be oversensitive.
They seem to have blinders on to what other people might think. About their physical form as a result of greed for food, gluttony. With so much heaving flesh they're pretty much in your face. And keep chucking down food as if to say, 'fugg the world!'. And, 'here I come you skinny little fuggers get outta my way before I squash you and roast your arms and legs on the barbie'.
Yes, deprived of food their brain's bulk control module might go on martial law mode and then cannibalism would kick in....nothing oversensitive about that. In fact it's anti-social. |

I support the chief's comments in some way, but the tone, perhaps, was too abrasive. We have to factor in how the force viewed his tenure on the job. How was his rapport with the officers who served him? So I think we should also give those officers the benefit-of-the-doubt.
I do think officers should submit to examinations every couple of years.
They should be given enough time to get in shape.
I do have a friend who is a Chicago cop, and he is not overweight. He does his job, and he is good at his job. And he is very hard on those who engage in domestic abuse. He tells me funny stories. One he was on assignment with the feds, and this local cop stopped him and said to him "Didn't you notice you changed lanes without a signal?" and my friend responded "Did you know you're impeding a federal investigation?". The cop quickly became very apologetic and left him alone. LOL He hates cops like that. |

It will have to be proven that being in shape is an actual job requirement for police officers. I worked at Kmart for a year, and among people in the store I was more than anyone else responsible for chasing down shoplifters (something I was supposed to be ready to do while I carried out my usual chores of making bales of cardboard, rearranging new freight and so on). A staff would give a code over the PA system which meant to move on over to a part of the store, or to the doors in preparation for a runner. It never happened in the year I was there. So if people actually on site never have to chase a person, what are the chances of a police officer being at the scene fast enough to need to do it?

As someone who has worked along side many polic officers over the years, let me assure you, they are tested physically on their jobs quite regularly. |
