I can't freakin' believe it! Someone in my building must have wireless.... so, I get to my new place and am online for free. I am waiting for that person to figure out what I am doing and start hacking.
Does me being online keep the other person (who is paying for it) offline? Is that a stupid question?
Am I asking for a virus by using an unknown connection?
Anyone know of wifi spots around Jamsil? I know, I know, Seoul isn't known for having wireless everywhere.
Back at 'home', I was able to get free wifi with my McDonald's coffee. |

Wow, good for you. They've set up their network and not bothered to set up a password.
You won't really affect their ability to use their connection since most accounts here have access to a lot of bandwidth. If you were doing a massive download on a file-sharing service then their downloads might be a bit slow, but most of the time there'd be no way for them to notice.
Enjoy it while you can. They may or may not wise up to security eventually.
Risk to you from viruses and hacking? I don't know, sorry. It might pay to get a decent firewall and virus program, though.
Most cafes should have a wifi service. Nespot has one that's available everywhere, but you need to pay for it. |

I'd change your computer's name because the router is probably logging that everytime you use it. You should be careful doing this, its considered a crime to steal bandwidth in many countries. |

All that's being logged by the router is your "computer name", which more often than not is something like "acer74533442333". Look around System in Control Panel in Windows and you should find the place to change that if it happens to be giving your real name.

Not a stupid question, but no, no real effect on the owner. In Korea, bandwidth is more common than air, so provided you're not doing anything really heavy (big downloads, streaming video), the person downstairs won't notice a difference.
I suggest you tread lightly on that system. The danger is, they'll discover people are using it after noticing their connection got slower, and they'll figure out how to put a password on it.
I bet you $20 there are a bunch of other neighbours who are "borrowing" the connection, too, I wouldn't feel too guilty about using it, but if you did, you could always offer to slide the owner 20,000w a month or something, if you can figure out where they live.

Probably not. When you do your banking, if you bank online, look for the padlock in your browser that indicates you're using 128 bit encryption. This is secure. However, pretty much nothing else you do on that connection is secure, so don't send messages back to your North Korean minders or anything like that. Also, use a firewall. |

Thanks for the info! I have been online more often than I wanted to be at first... and the connection is fantastic. I really should find the owner and just slide him some money. It would be cheaper for all involved. |
