What are you favorite games to play in class?
For my lowest level--8 to 10 years old, I will allow the kids to play thumbs up. Basically, half the kids put their heads down, close their eyes and put their thumbs up. The remaining students walk around the room and tap another student's thumb, and return to the front of the room. Then, one standing student instucts the sitting kids to open your eyes, lift up your head and stand up. Then, he or she asks, who touched your thumb? It was my favorite game in elementary school.
For my students who behaved during the week, I will treat them to Grammar Basketball on Thursday. It is a variation of a game I learned in middle school. I divide the class up into teams of 2 or 3 and give each team a sheet of paper. Previously, I read their weekly journals and noted common gramitical and spelling errors. Then, I will write one sentence or mispelled word at a time on the board:
I like to playing soccer.
I like to play the soccer.
Yesterday, I eat the lunch.
Febuary
Then, each group has time write the correct sentence. If they are correct, the get a point or several points, depending on the question. Next, they can choose to shoot a ball in to a basket. If the shot goes in, their points double and they can choose to shoot again. But, they have to take two steps back. If they miss any shot, they go back to zero.
If I feel that too much time is spent shooting, then I will stipulate a three consecutive correct answer rule. Also, during the last ten mintutes, shots triple. |
