|
|
Has anyone tried using a VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) phone? I'm back in the states and just got Voicepulse. It is fantastic.
I still have many friends back in Korea who would be interested in giving it a try.
You see, you can have a relative back in North America buy the Voicepulse or Vonage hardware (or whatever company you like), ship it over to you, and you then make international calls as if they were local.
If anyone has VOIP, which company do you like best? Also, which broadband provider works best for VOIP?
Cheers. |

if you use skype then you just need a headset or USB telephone to call a regular landline anywhere in the world. It's incredibly cheap for me to call England from here, and as long as I make sure nothing else is using my broadband, I get decent quality.
Just got off the phone with my Dad in fact, cost me a few pennies for a 25 minute call. |

Another vote for skype. I use a Bluetooth headset so I don't even have to be sat by the computer when I'm talking. |

ahhh this may be true with skype too but with Net2phone you can call other people who have net2phone installed for free anywhere in the world similar to how you would with netmeeting e.g. pc to pc |

I think you may have told me this in a previous conversation, but I forgot. Thanks for this info! |

With my VOIP service, my wife and I ran a little test on the weekend. She watched streaming video from Korea on the highest setting she could get--300k?--while I spoke with one of my friends. The call was crystal clear.
I've done some tests on my service to check the speed--cable broadband (RoadRunner)--and the results point to well above average speed.
She tested the service for calls to Korea last night, and the quality was the same as our land line.
Man, I wish I this technology had been as good when I was in Korea.

That quality is dependent on all sorts of things so let's not get our hopes up too much too soon. Your best bet is to try out lots of different ways of doing it until you find one that works for you. Sounds like you did that first time.
Basically, find your weakest link and you will find your best quality. Calling my wife's parents in the UK is usually problematic for some reason. No other numbers in the UK give us problems. I think it is their phone system or exchange. This only started happening in the last few months but it is one example of how I would never guarantee the quality of VOIP at the moment. It is still early days and teh phone networks vary so much in the world. Give it five years and we'll have something approaching guaranteed quality. Now it can be hit and miss depending on time of day, number called and whether Jupiter is ascending in Pisces or whatever...
Demo and I know how even with the best tech in the world, making this happen can be problematic... don't we now . |

I use Skype: excellent. I have Sypein, with a London number: this has voicemail and call forwarding. If it's off, calls are forwarded to my Korean HP. |

For business, VOIP can save some bucks, but for personal use, who needs a land line? For what? I haven't had a land-line on about 8 years, no need with mobile phones, AND less telemarketing calls. |

When VOIP is for free and Mobile is not, landlines will come back with a revenge. |

Yes, I'm sure people will sit at home just to wait for a call to save 3 cents...
I bet you also think the horse-drawn carriage will roar back with a vengance given the fuel costs these days, huh? |
