ok, so i went to ye dental clinic (near gangnam) and the dentist told me before he even xrayed my mouth that i need a root canal and some other weird filling, for a grand total of 1.8 million won. wtf is up with that? does anyone know a decent dentist who isn't going to try and bugger me? i know there a problem with the tooth, but it doesn't hurt or anything, so why would i need a root canal?

There's no way it should cost that much. I paid around 20,000 for a root canal over the summer, though the crown will cost around 400,000.( not covered by insurance) I'm pretty sure I posted info on my dentist a while ago- will try to dig it up.

Say what!!!!!!!!!! The idiot didn't even do an x-ray and he tells you....you need a ......
Tell you what....I'll save you a million. Come on down here...I have some tools...screwdriver..craftsmen drill and bits... small sizes and a hammer! Do you have health insurance? If no...why? If yes...so do I and my health insurance paid for some dentistry work last week including x-rays, injections, fillings and some root canal work.
Shop around I'd say! In seoul...everyone wants big money! Take a subway to a smaller city and visit a dentist instead.

A Korean dentist said, 6 years ago, I needed a root canal. So instead he put in a big, 'cushiony' filling over, since it was close to the nerve. In Thailand I went to, not a 'everyman' dentist like the former, a hotshot 'for foreigners' dentist (basically foreigners who are afraid of pain Smile, especially in a 'strange country', who want to be coddled in English). They said, woah, that filling is cracked, big alert. Root canal ASAP. That was a year ago. They also said the crown would be four hundred bucks. It was like being in a BMW showroom about the crowns. Their coo-ing recommendations, top of the line, etc.
Dunno about root canals, have to be done eventually. But they're big money for the dentist, dat true Smile

Does anyone know how much a tooth cleaning costs? I work at a public school and pay into a health plan? Will that be covered?

If he did an oral-exam, he could have known that you needed a root canal without taking an x-ray.

Nut

Cracked tooth, etc.

dental cleaning at ye dental was 100,000 won, but i'm guessing that's not standard. and it wasn't a good one either.

Cleanings aren't covered by insurance- only emergency treatments are. I seem to remember being told that it would cost around 50,000 or so at my dentist, but I could be wrong.

I have never had a cavity and a KOrean dentist in Hannam told me I had one in 2001. Liar he was. Anyway, what is a root canal? Sounds scary. Is that when the root dies or something?

I have a really good dentist, but he's out in Bundang. But, if anyone in Bundang is looking for a dentist, try Dr. Jin. He's on the third floor of the McDonald's building at Samsung Plaza.

Yes. That is three times the price I paid in Canada.

I went to YE a couple weeks ago. They charged 900,000 for 2 fillings. Well the 2 teeth were pretty bad. They had to remove a former cap on one.

In both precedures, they 'drilled' out the infected areas of a tooth leaving a BB-sized cavity. They then took an impression of the tooth and formed a resin filling, not the old ceramic type. They temporarily filled the tooth and was told to return in a couple days for the finished product.

The next visit, they took the filling from the mold and put in in my tooth. Perfect fit.

In my opinion, this is much better than just applying a ceramic substance to fill the area.

Of course, they are paying for the staff, equipment, and the sheik, modern office.

I was quite happy. A little pricey, but all is good.

I've got a couple shots of them on my blog below.

I just went to a dentist in Bundang near Sunae station- next to family mart, 2nd floor (it's called G7, and they advertise that that they are a "foreigner's clinic"- their English was understandable, although not stellar). I paid almost 700,000 (including the 50,000 for a good cleaning- they do hydrosonic cleanings, which I can't find here in Incheon). I had 3 fillings, and they said because they use gold, the price is more than what I would pay in the states. The alternative was resin, but the hygenist said resin won't last a lifetime. She also recommended 2 root canals, which are covered by health insurance, but I passed because after a week with the temporary fillings, I didn't notice much of a sensitivity to cold foods like she said I would.

I found a site on the web that explained in length how root canals are performed, but the site mentioned not all root canals are effective. Also, my friend had a root canal here, and his got infected, so he had to go to the ER (he had an abcess that needed to be drained Exclamation ). I opted to forgoe the root canal. Anyway, I recommend G7 in Bundang!
