I have just started applying for jobs and I would consider taking a position on Jeju Island. I would just like some information from anyone who has lived there or is living there now. What kind of things are there available to do on the island? Will I be able to find English books, movies, etc? Are there any places to take Korean lessons or martial arts? Are there gyms nearby? I'm just trying to narrow down the locations where I am willing to teach. Thanks. |

Yes, you can find all of that in Jeju, in the city at least. If you are outside of Jeju City or Seogwipo, it'll be tougher.
PM me if you have any more questions about the areas on the island.

Currently here on Jeju so if you need ant questions answering then give me a tinkel. It's not a full on party place but there are plenty of Waygooks about. You have sea, mountain and many other great treks, there are plenty of bars (two waygook bars) a great Indian restaurant (Bagdad) and fantastic Korean food with fresh tastey meat.
If you are in Shin Jeju or Gu Jeju you will be definitely in the loop, outside of the city it's much quiter. Coincidentally i do know of a good Hogwan that is recruiting for end of December and the beginning of March. The guy who owns the place is a Yank and he's married to a Korean. There are a good number of Waygooks at this school and it's rep is very good. No, i am not a recruiter, the posting is on Dave's job board and i know people who have or are working at this school. If you would like to get more info about the school then do a posting on rhymeswithjeju it's part of of the Yahoo groups, i am sure the feed back will be top notch. For a newbie i don't think you will get a better gig in town, with no experience it's 1.9 mill and no splits. Any help needed let me know.
The location of the school is in Shin Jeju, the new city. |

English books and movies are available anywhere in Korea, really, so there's no reason to let that stop you from living anywhere in the Republic. Videos are subtitled, not dubbed, so you can always rent a video or DVD, and any Hollywood movies coming out in theaters will also be subtitled.
Plus, with an internet connection you can download anything you want. Korean internet connections are fast and cheap. Bring your laptop.
As for books, I don't know about bookstores or book exchanges on the island, but www.whatthebook.com has a huge selection and ships anywhere in Korea.
I live in Seoul, but I've visited Cheju several times and love it. It's beautiful, clean, has a nice climate, a great mountain to climb, and beautiful beaches. I can't say what it would be like to live there for a year, but it definitely has a lot to offer. |
