I am considering a job in Bucheon, near GS Square. It seems like a nice area, but after poking around on Dave's I get a sense that there aren't many foreigners and that it is a pain to go out and meet people. Any thoughts?
Thanks |

Are you kidding? Bucheon is AWESOME!! It's really clean (as clean as Korean can get outdoors), there are a lot of new shopping centers and new housing complexes, a big huge park...Koreans say that the Bucheon town government/council "really cares" and puts on a lot of festivals and events. Also, it's not very far to take a bus or subway into Seoul. |

I guess sometimes Dave's doesn't have all the answers. |

Bucheon is great. There are probably around 300 foreigners here and there is a pretty good foreigner community(new Canada bar too). Lots of shopping and close to Itaewon and other cool places. I would recommend it, it is not desolate at all. Close to a million people live in Bucheon. |

I have lived in Bucheon for three months now and I really like it. It's a clean city with lots of parks. There is also many places to go shopping. If you decide to come just pm me and I can introduce you to many people and things to do. I wish you the best of luck in your job search. |

I have lived in Korea for 11 years now, the past 3 in Bucheon. I live in the newer area of Bucheon which is Sang Dong. It's nice. Across the main road (anything much past the Hyundai dept store - which is GS square territory) is not as pleasant. So there are indeed 2 sides to Bucheon. Sang dong is definitely better than the other. |

Word!!
Bucheon - especially the area around Central Park, etc., - was appealing face-to-face other desired areas of the R.O.K. as far back as 2000.
It is better now that a Canuck put a decent pub on the ground and lots of other E.F.L.ers, etc., hang there.
Maybe in ten years, it'll rival the other foreigner-drenched areas of Greater Seoul. Let us hope that Bucheon does rival such spots, eh. |

It is really great here, but I know at least 10 foreigners who live and work around GS Square, including my own co-worker. It's not a bad area to live, you are walking distance to all the amenities. It's newer and clean than Bucheon area. We meet Wednesday nights for dinner every week, and about 15-25 Foreigners regularily show up. Tons of people here! There are a lot of nay-sayers on here about Bucheon, but Sang-Dong and around GS square is great! Just let us know and we'll be more than happy to introduce you to everyone! |

I was all set to take the job ... so much about it seemed ideal, and this thread sold me on Bucheon. The school was right in GS Square. I had the contract all worked out except for one sticking point ... they didn't enroll employees in the pension program. I knew it was illegal, and when I asked here on the forums about it the response I got was that it probably wouldn't be worth the trouble. As I am continuing to hunt for a job, I can't help but worry that maybe it would have been okay to just ignore the issue as a "when in Korea do as ..." type of thing. Especially when my next interview confided in me that I would save money because they didn't pay any taxes.
Nonetheless, thanks for all the feedback guys. In the course of my research I think I decided I will head back at to Bucheon at least once to try some Canada Buddy.
Cheers all! |
