Far from offending Jews, some see Borat as an anti-racism crusader

TORONTO (CP) - Borat Sagdiyev, the fictional character at the centre of the new comedy "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan," is ridiculously anti-Semitic.

The movie, opening Friday, features a "running of the Jew" segment back in Borat's home village in Kazakhstan that would be astonishingly offensive if it were not so ludicrously funny. On the Comedy Network's "Da Ali G Show," Borat once took to the stage at a country-and-western bar in the southern United States and performed a song called "Throw the Jew Down the Well" as the rednecks sang along and cheered.

Yeah, I can't see Borat lasting much longer - once he runs out of people who aren't in on the joke, the joke dies. He's had a damn good run though.
In my country there is problem
And that problem is the Jew
They take everybody money
And they never give it back
Throw the jew down the well (repeat line)
So my country can be free (repeat line)
You must grab him by his horns (repeat line)
Then we have a big party (repeat line)
If you see the Jew coming
You must be carefull of his teeth
You must grab him by his money
And I tell you what to do
I bet Meegook would sing along. |

New movie promo tours tend to do that.
Can't be as bad as Vin Diesel's promo tour. |

How do the Uzbeks feel about Borat?
"Borat is also known for his animosity toward Uzbekistan. He has been known to talk about the fictional 'Tishniek' massacre, including during his 'Soul Motion' Dance class where he depicted the massacre and proceeded to explain how many Uzbeks were "crushed" on that day. He later told how he was "very proud" of the massacre and said it was not sad because "it is us who do the kill." In a recent press interview (which attracted more reporters than one given by the actual Kazakhstan president held at the same time) Borat threatened his country would "commence bombardment" of Uzbekistan cities with catapults if their anti-Kazakhstan propaganda did not cease. I never heard him mentioned. After they find out you're an American, the next questions are always "What state?" and either "Do you know Michael Jackson?" or "Do you know Arnold Schwarzeneggar?"
I do know that the Uzbeks don't like the Kazakhs. Despite the fact that their separate ethnicities are an artificial construct of the Soviets. When our family dog disappeared, my host brother accused the Kazakhs of taking and eating him (the dog came back a couple days later).

I suppose it's a lost cause to expect this one to make to our shores?
If so, there's always bittorrent. If anyone finds a quality one, please let me know.

Hear IS wat Thay Say:
"We do not rule out that Mr. Cohen is serving someone's political order designed to present Kazakhstan and its people in a derogatory way. We reserve the right to any legal action to prevent new pranks of the kind. We view Mr. Cohen's behaviour at the MTV Europe Music Awards as utterly unacceptable, being a concoction of bad taste and ill manners which is completely incompatible with ethics and civilized behaviour."-Yerzhan Ashykbayev, Kazakh Foreign Ministry Spokesman
