I have a bunch of pdfs on my computer and I was thinking if I had an ebook reader or pda, that I might actually read some of them that I've had for a long time.

I'm just wondering what my options are, as I know nothing about them.

Something that plays MP3's and can function as a decent planner/organizer would be nice, but I don't want to spend more than a couple hundred thousand won either.

Someone out there has to know more than I do about this, and I'd like to know a little more about it before I go and try to negotiate my way through Yongsan.

Thanks

Have a look through here and see if you can see anything you like. I have a Compaq with Windows 2003 mobile...plays MP3s, has wireless internet, Word, etc...

Not sure what you will get for under 200,000 though...

It can be hard to find a PDA with an English o/s, since the o/s is built into the ROM. I've seen previously people finding English PDAs at Yongsan. Might take some leg work. I bought myself one when I went back to Canada, a low level iPAQ (iPAQ and Palm seem to be about the only PDAs in town these days). I got a 2 gb SD card and put a lot of downloaded TV shows on the SD card and I can watch stuff on the subway. That's pretty cool.

Right....good point. An English OS is probably a good idea. Mine is Korean and I haven't a clue as to the avaliability of English. One can flash the ROM to English and download English Windows CE.

Thanks for the pointers. I'll probably print out your tips before I do any sahopping.

I take it there wouldn't be any problem with viewing .pdf files then?

I gather we answered every question you didn't ask but the one you did. I would think a PDA would have no problem:

Haha, right.

Well, it looks like viewing .pdfs shouldn't be a problem. Still have a lot of research to do. Anyhow, thanks for all the info.

Stealing intellectual property is wrong!
So don't download MIRC.
Don't connect to undernet.
Don't join channel #bookz
Don't download any fiction or non-fiction your heart desires.
Don't sae .rtf files as a .txt file
Don't load that file into Wave pdb converter and change it into a Palm OS .pdb file
Don't load that .pdb onto your PDA!

Just don't do it!

Cool

How geeky are you? If you're interested you could go down my route which is using a Nintendo DS.

Clearly it's designed to play games, but it can do a whole lot more. I'm fairly heavily into the HomeBrew scene (making homemade software work on the DS).

Regarding your needs, I personally use my DS to read books and magazines more than I play games on it. I'm currently working my way through a backlog (2004 to present) of New Scientist magazines that I obtained. It looks great on my DS and my commute flies by.

In simple terms you buy a Nintendo DS ($150), and a flashcart ($100), and then you can do the following on the go (for free if you're naughty):

* Any of the 600+ Nintendo DS games
* Any of the 2000+ GameBoy Advance and GameBoy Colour games
* SCUMMVM games (old Lucas Arts games like Monkey Island and Sam 'n' Max)
* SNES and NES games

Oh, and add to that some other features:
* Movie viewer
* MP3 player
* Ebook reader
* Web browser and TV Tuner
* VOIP
* Personal organiser
* POP/SMTP Email + RSS feed reader
* MSN Messenger
* Comic book reader, which in theory allows you to read any PDF on your DS.
* Put Linux on your DS

If you want to know more I can provide more info. I also have a page detailing more stuff HERE
