This has been asked and answered before, but I can't seem to find it.
On 'My Computer', I don't see my CD drive letters properly. I have a multiple card reader, a DVD writer/ CD-Writer Combo and a CD ROM. All have power and the DVD writer will eject okay. However when I put in a disk with data on it it opens a window asking me what action to take; it also show it as being drive K, the CF card!?
How do you reassign drive letters?
I've checked the drivers, re-booted, unplugged each and re-booted to see if when I plugged them up again, windows would detect them. I also uninstalled them from the hardware manager! WTF?
Do you think DAEMON tools has anything to do with it...
Another issue: Has anyone experienced problems with their computer not shutting down when you tell it to shut down or restart? My VAIO has some issues. I thought there might be a quick fix before I turn it in for warranty service...
Thanks.. |

time to reinstall windows. This will probably fix all of your problems. |

Administrative tools - computer management - disk management...this should allow you to change drive letters. As for the other issue, there is probably a program that isn't responding - continuously. Look at the programs running in the background...it's a long, boring task to find out which one is the culprit, but it can be done.
Kill them off one or two at a time and then shutdown. If you get a fast, clean shutdown after 'stopping' one of the programs, you may have found the problem. It's a heck of a method, but it has worked for me. |

That's fairly messed up.
I think Daemon may be messing with your system. I had the same problem the last (and last) time I used Daemon, and indeed, it led to a format. I couldn't get the virtual drives to dismount and it also changed my drive letters.
This affects programs as the system would look in C: for an .exe, but of course, they were now on X: or whatever the drive had been renamed to.
I tried all sorts of registry fixes and software, but in the end, it was easier for me to wipe it all out and start fresh.
You may want to try to registry stuff first; perhaps it can be sorted. Uninstall Daemon and any other drive emulation software you may have, then get your hands on a good registry checking program. See if the software has an entry for "virtual devices" (I think url=http://www.pctools.com/registry-mechanic/Registry Mechanic[/url] has this feature) and see if it can't sort you out.
PM me if you need that program, I will try to sort you out if it doesn't have a trial period. Seems it does though.
I will try to think through other options... a bit pressed for time right now mate.

I think you may be right. I found out that my kid downloaded Microsoft Flight Simulator X recently and apparently you have to create a virtual drive for it to run because it's a bootleg. (he couldn't wait, I told him I'd buy the original when the PX finally gets it.)
So, when time permits, I'll uninstall Daemon whatever...(what does that do anyway?) I'll see what happens.
Thanks as always. |

Daemon tools creates a virtual drive so CD images (.iso files) can be run. It's designed to fool CD copy protection into thinking that the correct CD is in the drive. A pirated CD lacks some of the physical features of a paid for product, and Daemon emulates these features or otherwise circumvents them so one can run the pirated game.
Personally, it's easier for me to get a no-cd file from the net than to stuff around with Daemon. It is a free product and although many people have no issues using it, it can be a very dangerous program. I refuse to go to great lengths to play a pirated copy of a game, so if it needs Daemon, Alcohol, CD-ROM drive disconnections, patches galore or other CD-ROM masking programs, I can't be bothered. It's not worth the potential problems and these programs, although written by some very capable people, are very intrusive and potentially destructive.
cdfreaks is the place to learn about this kind of thing. |
