Born and raised in Mtl. The fall colors will be beautiful on Mount Royal. Go to the lookout and you'll have a great view of the city. Secondly, walk around Old Montreal. You'll feel like you're walking around a European city. Finally, go see St.Joseph's Oratory. It doesn't really matter if you're a Christian or not. It's really incredible to see.

Mtl Arrow Boston is 5 hours. I'd count more on 7 or 8hrs from NYC, and that's going at a good clip.

Old Montreal, and if you want to crank it up at night walk down St Catherine St around the Crescent St area. Streets of bars on either side.
Sir Winston Churchill's Pub on Crescent is by now, an institution.

Rue St Denis and Rue St Laurent (a little more east of that) have more bars and are great places to crank it up too.

Google "Montreal bed and breakfast" and be sure to ask about one that's right downtown.

Or check this link : http://www.bbmontreal.qc.ca/

I don't mean to offend any Montrealers here, but if I was you I'd drive on another couple of hours to Quebec City. If "interesting, cool, very different, European-like, great nightlife" is what you're looking for, Quebec City's where you want to go.

The hip streets to do your shopping and eating on are St. Laurent and St. Denis streets. Very artsy and the people are cool.

Make sure you eat Montreal's bagels. They're mouth-watering and melt in your mouth. The best bakeries bake them in wood ovens.

The best economical place to stay is here http://www.hostelz.com/hostel/21114-Auberge-Maeva

Cheap, clean and in Plateau Mont Royal, an artsy neighborhood with well-preserved old-style Montreal homes. Just taking a walk in the neighborhood is a pleasure in itself. The hostel is 1 block from the subeway too.

well, the person i spoke with today said it took him 5-1/2 hours from Mont Royal and he was only going 65miles/hour and he assured me it would take no longer than 6 hours, will have to google map it and see i guess

Usually they don't check. But they can. You might still have a passport from your Korea time, so bring that.

Officially you should have "proof of citizenship" with you. That's not just to get into Canada, but also to return to the US so you can prove you're not a greasy illegal trying to sneak in.

Oh - leave the weapons at home. This may sound snide, buy a long time ago I worked for the government tourism department and we had more problems than we needed from visitors getting very upset at the border that their constitutional right to bear arms didn't extend into New Brunswick. Radar detectors, too.

Montreal is a great city. Wear some thermal underwear as it begins to get nippy about now. Mont Royal is a great place~ lovers lying down on the grass making out under the trees. Wink

Go to Dunns or Schwartz for an awesome smoked meat sandwhich. There are a few other good ones as well. The bagels are incredible in the Jewish bakeries.

I really like Old Montreal. Get a horse and buggy ride~ they're lots of fun! The parks are really beautiful as well. There is much to do~ all depends what you're interested in doing.

Finally, you might want to check out a few movies that are set in Montreal~ "Jesus of Montreal" - there is also the one with deNiro and the other one with the Friend's guy who plays a dentist.

Cheers!

Yeah, they check. Usually for the typical stuff - things that are illegal, etc.

I've been back and forth 100s of times between Michigan and Ontario (and a half dozen on the ON/NY side as well). Sometimes I just drive right across with just a few questions asked.. other times I've had every item of my car and person checked. Generally it takes a couple minutes to get across. The longest delay for me was around 5 hours and another time for 1 hour. Generally, they just let you go through though.

IDs are essential these days (in either direction) - it wasn't always that way. Generally you almost always have to answer 'what is your nationality?', 'how long will you be in _____?', 'what do you intend to do in _________?', 'are you carrying any fruit/weapons/drugs/etc.?'

This just turned up in the NYT today (36 hours in Montreal) and may be of some use to you, Peony, though they generally travel more expensively than I do.
