How do you collect money from the gov't when you are on maternity leave? I thought your workplace would pay it, but a guy in my personnel dept. just told me the gov't pays it. Are contract employees eligible for the pay? I work full time at my company, and since I'm married to a Korean, I was thinking I might possibly be eligible for it, but then again, I'm a foreigner, so maybe not. I wonder how much women get, and how long they can receive it for. I figured at least some of the guys on the board have wives who've recieved the $$$. Anybody have any info? I mentioned it to my husband, but he does everything last minute, so that's why I'm asking about it on dave's....

If you're working contract to contract (yearly contracts) you probably aren't eligible, although it might be different if you're working in a Korean company, as opposed to within the field of English education. Personally, I quit my job at 8 months -- thought they might give me some portion of my severance at least, but they'd just done major renovations on the building so they cheaped out on me. Hope things work out better for you! Are you planning on going back to the same company? How much time off are you hoping/expecting for leave in that case? My director said she'd hold my job open for 3 months of leave if Iwanted to go back -- unpaid though.

Quoted from the labor standards act:
Article 72 (Protection of Health of Pregnant Female)
(1) An employer shall allow a pregnant female worker 90
days of maternity leave before and after childbirth. In such
case, 45 days or more shall be allocated after the childbirth.
(2) Of the maternity leave pursuant to paragraph (1), the
first 60 days leave shall be with pay.
(3) An employer shall not have a female worker in pregnancy
work overtime, and, if there is a request from the concerned
worker, shall transfer the worker to other light or easy work.

Your boss is required to pay the first 60 days salary of your maternity leave. The next 30 days is without pay. He must hold your job open for 90 days from your first day of leave.

I know that in the public school system even contract workers (read foreign teachers) are eligible for this 90 day leave (60 days with pay) and it IS in the contract and enforcable by the labor board.

Oooooh- cool- Ttompatz, where did you get that from? I'd like to show my boss the website if you got it off the web! Casey's Moon, if that's the case, you could go to the labor board to get that 2 months of pay. If you plan to go back to that school, you could talk to your boss about it. Renovations or not, if that's the law, you shouldn't be cheated. Are you going back to that school eventually?

I'm working right up to my due date (my contract expires Feb. 1, and I'm due Jan. 28th). Actually, I think I end up doing more work at home cleaning and cooking, so I'd rather be at work, parked in front of my computer! The company said they will give me 3 months after the expiration of my contract, so I'll be back on May 1.

I downloaded it from the labor board website but I don't have the link for the English file handy.
The main website is at http://www.molab.go.kr/

PM me with your e-mail and I will send a copy of the English version to you (has all the specifics so you /your husband can get the KOREAN version) and it has the references to the specific acts and other related updates.
