In California one of my favorite foods is Korean Soft Tofu soup. I'm a vegetarian, so I get mushroom or veggie. I've asked Koreans a few times what the Korean name for this soup is and for some lame reason I never can remember. Now I'm heading to Pyeongtaek and I want to be sure to find a good Tofu House. Can someone tell me what the official name for this is and if you know of a good place, where that is? I'm getting hungry just thinking about it! |

Sun dubu chiggae. (soon doo-boo)
Most of the time in Korea it is served with meat or at least shellfish so you need to be careful. Also, don't be one of those veggie's that thinks kimchi is vegetarian--it certainly is not.
(and this should be posted in the general forum) |

순두부 is one of my favorite Korean foods, too. Pretty much every kimbap and boonshik place will carry it, but if you want the best soondooboo out there try going to BSD, a chain that specializes in it and has about 20 different kinds, and there's a basket of eggs on the table, so you can put in as many as you like. They have several locations, but the only one I can direct you to is the one in Shinchon, which is right near Shinchon train station. I recommend their beef soondooboo. |

Just to confirm flotsam's point that most places serve sundubu with at least shellfish in it, if not higher life forms. There is one place near my university that does only vegetarian sundubu, but it's not so special that it's worth going out of your way for.
PS to Son Deureo: I know you were making a general rec, but couldn't pass it up. |

I don't know if you've heard it from others, but a lot of people in Korea still don't fully understand what 'vegetarian' means. A lot of times restaurants use animal-based broth in their Jjigae and don't realize that that makes it nonvegetarian, so ask before ordering.
I also love Soon Dubu, but hate the MSG that restaurants add to it. It's really easy to make (provided you have access to the ingredients), and you have more control over what you do - and don't - put into the dish, so let me know if you want the recipe. |

Don't get Jiggae with it.
Just get Soon doo boo. It will be tofu in a watery broth that you add a mixture of soy, sesame seeds, and other spices to. I wouldn't trust any Jiggae to be vegan. |

A watery shellfish-based broth most likely. |

D'oh! I was trying to be helpful to the OP as well, I didn't notice that she's a veg. TBH I don't know if they have a vegetarian choice on their menu or not. With 20 different varieties I'll bet one of them isn't meat or seafood based but I just didn't pay attention.
However, if the OP is thinking about eating meat again, she could do much worse than to try BSD's beef soondooboo. |

BSD definitely has at least one vegetarian option. So does Dolkemaul Tofu House (돌깨마을).
OP, check out this page. Also, send me a PM with your e-mail to be included on the Seoul Vegetarian Club mailing list.
