A friend who works for the UN came to Seoul a couple weeks ago to participate in some talks on what Korea should do in the event of bird flu hitting the nation (at a bird flu conference in Singapore, the Korean delegate only seemed to want to know at which point they declare martial law). She commented to me she was hammering down poktanjus/boiler makers with the minister of health.

I nearly spit up my milk when she told me this over MSN. Last year the minster of health and other members of the government made a big thing about trying to eliminate the poktanju and other heavy drinking rituals from the business and political culture of the nation.

He probably just meant amongst dirty poor people. Rich people are clean, obviously.
