This may be old for people:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKILQPBcVTI This video was in Seoul.
I want to have a Free hugs day in Busan. I am organizing a day and I am looking for some people (korean or foreign) who want to give some hugs to people.
The "Free Hugs" Campaign is quite international now. I have seen videos of Teran, Ukraine, London as well as a SLEW of others around north America. INCLUDING the one in South Korea.
I am INTENT on doing this...regardless of how likely/unlikely it is Koreans will be interested in a free hug.
If you are in Busan or in the Busan area...OR whatever and are interested in being involved in this, send me a PM.

In curiousity I am forced to ask: why the hell, aside from pressing up to nubile young bodies, would anybody do it? |

About 1000 comments on that youtube page. They are very heartwarming as usual... This one cracked me up.
"You korean bastards keep building those nuclear bombs and well use you for target practice. We got some new laser weapons we would like to test."

I was outside Jamsil tube station last weekend and there were a couple of young Korean guys, I aa guessing they were uni students, wandering around with a "Free Hugs" sign written in English, Korean and Japanese.
I would have taken them up on their offer, but I was on the bus at the time.
Did anyone else them?

There was a Korean guy in his early 20's giving out free hugs in Seomyeon (Busan) last weekend - near Judies Tae Hwa. There was some guy following him around with a camera filming it.
Not saying "don't go ahead," just "somebody already did it in Busan." I only saw one old lady take him up on it though... |

No rolly eyes that video is funny, 4 and a half minutes and they only get about 10 hugs, half of which were A frames. |

Bah humbug! I don't mean to be the pessimist here...ok, maybe I do...but what the H-E-double hockey sticks does a hug from a complete stranger do for you? Make you feel all warm and fuzzy? Keep you from jumping off the ledge? Don't people have people they actually know and like to give them a hug?
Keep in mind I was once told by a girlfriend, "I need a boyfriend with emotions," before breaking up with me. |

When was the last time you've been hugged by someone other than a girlfriend/boyfriend?...hell, A FRIEND?
The question I'd ask it, what is so terrible about a little human contact?

Sorry, I think the idea sucks big time. A hug is good not because it feels good but becuase of what it means between you and a person you are close to. From a stanger it means nothing. Im sure you are well intentioned, but misguided. |

Yes, far better to post negative reactions to strangers on an internet forum than to spread positive energy among fellow humans on the street.
Khyber, it's a great idea.
I showed the video to students at my university and a bunch went and tried it on campus...they loved it.
But I guess they weren't cool enough to let their personal hangups interfere with doing something positive...unlike many of us, I guess.
About twenty years ago I had the chance to work in an old folks home as a volunteer, just for a weekend. Most of the residents didn't have regular visits from family and friends. Clearly, what they most wanted was physical contact- to hold hands, to walk arm and arm, and to hug. I hugged more people that day than on any single day since. The volunteers were supposedly "helping out", but we were the ones coming away the real winners, I think.
Aside from other reasons, a hug is good because it feels good. With a stranger it can mean everything.
Many people in fact don't have anyone they know and like to give them a hug.
Real world? rawiri, you are living in your own personal hell, I fear.

ugh...old people?
Why work with them...they're just going to die anyway?

Ever drive your car and just wave to people as you pass them by? The smiles and surprises you get are 100% genuine and you know that's all they'll think about for the rest of the day and a smile will still appear.
It makes their day and it makes my day.
It can't be much more different. Go for it, Khyber. These days, we should all do something of the sort as I believe we need it! |

I was in Hongdae this weekend, and towards the blurry end of the night I somehow found myself in possession of a "free hugs" sign (written in English and Korean). There was enough tequila in my blood to go for it with some enthusiasm and I have to say...it was a lot of fun! Sure, I may have been targetting all the good looking girls, but I ended up with just as many hugs from guys, and didn't get any negative attention at all. (One guy seemed a bit perturbed that I was hugging his girlfriend, but he got one too and all was well!)
Oh yeah, and I picked up a number or two as well... |
