|
|
Hey Guys & Girls,
This is my fourth year here in Korea with only a short two week vacation back to the States a couple years ago, so I need help with a bit of a reality check. Please understand this is not an "I hate Korea/Koreans" thread, because I don't.
Do Westerners repeat the obvious as much as Koreans (generalization recognized)? For example, yesterday my co-worker must have said "It's so cold" in Korean eight or nine times. It was, in fact, cold. But stating the obvious once is enough in my opinion. Do Westerners generally do the same thing? I've forgotten^^

In New Zealand at least I find that there's a little less of the constant running commentary on weather and eating habits. It's like no-one wants to share with me how they perceive the temperature, and no-one except my mum cares if I've had lunch yet.

I'm gonna go a bit off topic, but that's what this section of ESLCafe is for: are you from New Zealand? I've been thinking of visiting there. Could you recommend the best place to visit in NZ? Thanks.

Yeah, it's all good, but Wellington is the best. However, if I was going to recommend just one place it would be the north of the South Island during summer - Nelson, Abel Tasman National Park, etc etc.
But yeah, it's all good. Aim for coming over in our summer though, the weather's best around January/February. |

Yes, they do. And talking about the weather too mcuh is what oldies do. I only care about weather when I have a plane to catch or if I'm on vacation. |

I think they just find any break in conversation awkward and feel the need to fill those silences with fluff.
One K-girl (/woman/person belonging to the subset 'female') I went out with a few times kept telling me she was tired, all through the night during one of our outings.
To me this was a sign she was not enjoying herself and wanted to go home, yet every time I replied to her "oh, I'm so tired today" with "do you want to go home?" she would look surprised, not understanding where my question was coming from, and say that she didn't. |
