Hey gang. I'm headed to Seoul in just two weeks, and I'm still in that what-to-pack stage. I loe climbing, but I imagine that there aren't a ton of gyms there. What's the outdoors scene like? Should I bring my harness and hope for the best? And how accessable are other outdoor sports? Thanks. |

There are plenty of gyms in Seoul, don't worry about it. There are mountains to hike but you wont be needing a harness I'd imagine because they are not very big...! |

Bring your harness, shoes and whatever. There are a bunch of climbing clubs and some great places to climb. Lots of good face, slab and crack crack crack. Just finished a pretty great course. I don't have all the info in front of me but PM me if you want and I'll dig it up. Korea is great for climbing and a whole lot more affordable than most western countries. Good luck! |

Ah, sorry, he meant rock face climbing rather than hiking.
Don't listen to me.... |

Loads of rock climbing here, thing is you need to get involved in a club or find a korean who knows where to go. I have been a couple times with a husband of a teacher at my middle school.
If you are really into climbing I would suggest bringing your gear, its an elitist (sp?) type sport here and its expensive to buy.
Can't remember the site but if you search adventure korea, or rock climbing korea you should find some help.
I was recently hiking at Wolchusan national park and that place has rock faces everywhere. |

After a few months you, like many others, will start climbing the walls.
No equipment needed. Just a demented smile. |

Here is the link to the climbing school that I and a few friends have worked with. The prices on this page are steep but are aimed at those looking for custom private climbing packages (still cheaper than out west). We 250,000 won ($250) for a 5 day course (5 saturdays). There are beginner, intermediate and advance courses available depending on what you are looking for. The nice thing about the school is
1) The son of the owner (world champ climber) speaks decent enough English and is really nice
2) You are able to climb at your own level each week, regardless of the level of the class, many routes are available
Good luck and look out for a PM with more specific info |

check it and you'll find all the links you need. if you need someone to climb with, particularly if you're in seoul, lemme know. i actually need someone to help me train, as i've been off the rocks for almost a year (lack of motivation, haven't figured out how to really train in the woodie-style bouldering gym). but was decent back home (5.11, trad/sport, no formal lead exp.)
for gear, bring shoes, quickdraws, rope if you got one, harness, and trad gear if you got it. everything except chalk bags and chalk and tape is expensive here.
in seoul ice is better than rock. so i've heard. |
