i need a new computer and lcd set and i am obviously not to savvy with them.

i saw a couple of computers on the pops4u website and they seem to be good deals...not sure though.

can someone who is a litle more informed than me about computers let me know which one is a better deal...

computer 1:

ACTION RK196DQ 19 LCD
pentium4 prescott 541 3.2 ghz
ECS P4M800Pro-M2 mainboard
chaintech 512MB DDR2 SDRAM PC2-5300
western digital S-ATA 160G 7200rpm 8M
[VGA] UniChrome Pro 2D/3D
LG DVD-Multi GSA-H10N
300W power supply

price: 465 000 won

computer 2:

ACTION RK196DQ 19 LCD
celeronD 336 (2.80/ 775/ 64T)
ECS P4M800Pro-M2 mainboard
chaintech 512MB DDR2 SDRAM PC2-5300
western digital S-ATA 160G 7200rpm 8M
[VGA] UniChrome Pro 2D/3D
LG DVD-Multi GSA-H10N
250 watt power supply

price: 355 000 won

the catch with these prices is that you have to use powercomm or hanaro internet for 1 year.

as for me, i would use the computer for downloading movies, listening to music, emails, word processing, occasional game of sudden attack. i'll be in korea for a year so i'm also thinking about resale value....

any help is greatly appreciated. Very Happy

one more question.....how important is the difference in power supply between 300w and 250w when running a p4 3.2 computer??

Regarding resale value, either one will get you about 200,000 - 300,000Won after a year. The only difference is the processor. Let's look at just the cost of the processor:

Pentium 4 3.2Ghz = $95 (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1498713)

Celeron D 2.8GHz = so old that I cannot find a price on it. Probably around the $50 range.

Effectively, they want to charge you an extra $105 for the processor and 50 more watts for your PSU. I would recommend the first one if you want to have a prayer in trying to sell it a year or so from now. You aren't looking to go high-tech so really, either one will be fine. If you can afford the extra $105, then go for the Pentium.

I see that the video will be onboard, is that enough for Sudden Attack? If you plan on playing "other new games" out there, then this computer will not suffice. You may want to look into getting something much stronger. I hope this helps.

(EDITED FOR BREVITY)

The key here is that you have to sign a 1 year contract for your internet to get this deal. They are NOT that great of a deal.

You can get similar deals for cash in Yongsan without the need to commit to anything.

These are LOW-end systems and are about a 1/2 step above disposable.

If you can get a really good price on the internet deal to justify the 1 year hook-up they might be OK. If you are paying more than 30k per month for your internet, they you can do a better deal with your computer and internet separately.

As a side note, they are both underpowered (in terms of the power supply).

edited in after I got home - my local computer shop is offering the same as your system 1 for 499k won - 1 year warrenty and no strings.

thanks for the reply guys.

then i guess a better question would be, what's the best lcd monitor + computer set i can buy at yongsan for my needs and the 450 000 won range? what should i be looking for, asking for?

i'm pretty sure those yongsan vendors would have a field day with me if i don't go there informed... Laughing

as for the video card, i have an nvidia card that i'll put in that's good enough for basic games.

ttompatz: did the local computer store include a 19" lcd?

and i found a new price for computer 1 with a 350W power supply for: 430 000 won....does that make computer 1 a good deal?

the internet is a one year contract at 31 000 a month including modem rental.

Celeron = sadness. It's up to you though.

A celeron will choke on everything; you will be wishing you weren't such a cheapskate with every passing second after every single double click.

That's about all you need to know.

I disagree. I've got a celeron and I've been happy with it though now the processor speed is a little on the slow side (2.4ghz).

I am shamed. Embarassed

Sorry super..no harm intended. I honestly didn't know you had one and given all I know you do with your system, I may indeed be wrong.

I guess I am a gamer, and that's where I get my ideas.
