So tonight outside Yongsan Station a really friendly, sober, middle-aged guy who speaks fairly decent English came up and greeted me with great surprise. At first I thought it was just a random curious Korean but he knew my first name. I thought it must be someone from where I live (just south of Daegu) but it wasn't. He was interested in what I was doing now and is very happy that I like Korea so much I'm still here. He doesn't want me to go home to my home country and is thankful that I like Korea. When I first came to Korea I lived in Incheon for 7 months and then spent a couple months crashing at friends' places in Incheon and Bucheon. So I guess he knows me from there? Mr Cho, as he reminded me of his name, apparently lives in Suwon. He couldn't possibly be an ex-student's father because no one with his level of English would be stupid and gullible enough to sent his kids to my old academy.
I carried on a polite conversation for several minutes, we exchanged numbers and I said I had to get going, with Mr Cho wanting to invite me to his place in Suwon the next time I'm up here.
Then it occured to me - did he mistake me for someone else who had my name or one that sounded like it? After all, we do all look the same.
Oh well, never a dull moment in Korea. |
