I completed my CELTA certification in June, and now I'm applying for a public school job. Apparently the original certificate isn't enough, as they want proof that the course was over 100 hours. Isn't every CELTA course 120 hours? Just wondering what the whole point of this is.
Now I have to get a letter from the CELTA Training Center in Thailand, and they're not too keen on mailing anything. They want to fax or email, but this won't do. The Thai secretary can't seem to understand why I need this letter. I don't understand it either. On top of that, my CELTA trainers no longer work there. |

Surely your training centre has a website, which you could direct the koreans to. It should list your course as being over 100 hours.
If all fails, just say fine, i'll go to another recruiter or job that won't make a fuss over it. A fax from your school really should be enough to confirm it. |

I also did my CELTA in Thailand and I didn't have problems here, I Just showed em my provisiional certificate. Sorry to hear they're being lame to you like that.
The CELTA is fairly standardized across the board, 120 hours, 6 hours observed 6 hours TP, etc. They're asking because quite frankly I don't think they know what the CELTA is.
By chance did you train with Stuart Gale and Barbara Baird? ^^ |

Yes I did, small world! Unfortunately, I hopped around Thailand after the course was over and didn't get a chance to pick up my provisional certificate. Big mistake. |

Get in touch with UCLES/Cambridge ESOL. They'll be able to hook you up much more reliably than your school in Thailand. |

This is the CELTA syllabus and clearly states the number of hours required for successful completion of the course.

It just goes to show you that, after so many years of ESL emphasis in Korea, Korean decision makers in ESL are still ignorant about the basic qualifications for an ESL instructor. |

I'm planning on doing a Celta course in Thailand. Do you have to stick around after the course is completed to receive your certificate? They can't mail it to you? |

They will mail the actual CELTA certificate, but will hand you the provisional certificate on the following Monday after course completion. I didn't think the provisional certificate would be a big deal. |
