Howdy all, got a question that I could use some of your input on.

My wife is allowing me a budget of $200 to upgrade my computer as a Christmas present, and I'm trying to decide how to do it. I could upgrade the RAM or buy a new video card.

My current setup: P4 3.0, 1GB (4x256) PC2-4200 and a Radeon X300 128mb.

RAM Option: Sell the current sticks and buy 2GB (2x1024) PNY

VGA Option 1: GeForce 7600GT 256mb

VGA Option 2: Radeon X800XL 256mb

What do you guys think would be best? Bear in mind that I rarely do anything too taxing on my system except for playing Medal of Honor online and maybe if I can find F.E.A.R., I'll play that too.

Cheers and thanks.

if you are interested in playing high end graphical games then the 7600GT would be the way to go.

I know you want to upgrade your computer but here's what I would do with 200 bucks :

1. Sell off the 256mb RAMs and upgrade + buy a swank chair, your system is pretty good for what you want it to do until the next upgrade where you can buy a better video card.

2. Buy an external DIVX player with a hard drive and enjoy your christmas watching christmas movies and Seinfeld.

What is considered a high end graphical game? I play Medal of Honor, occasionally Sim City 4, and a few games from the late '90s. I might start playing Call of Duty 2 and/or F.E.A.R. depending on which my parents send me for Christmas.

Thanks for the advice, but I'm not going to be buying a new computer for at least another 2 years. This one has to last a while and the Mobo isn't good enough for the next generation of graphics and cores, so the RAM and VGA are about all I will be upgrading for a while.

Also, Seinfeld sucks and I would never want to watch it.

Basically, all of the new games out (within the past year) are capable of sucking up a lot of power and resources (especially F.E.A.R.). I have both F.E.A.R., F.E.A.R. Extraction Point, Quake 4, and Oblivion (the largest power mongers out there). With my system, I run them flawlessly. However, with yours, you will DEFINITELY need to upgrade your video card.

A 7600GT will serve the purpose of providing you with an overall "good" gaming experience; not "best", just "good". This is because of your memory and processor. No big deal, just remember that your video card is very important in the gaming arena.

With your specs and a 7600GT, you should be able to run F.E.A.R. at medium (computer) settings and medium to high graphical settings (depending on the frame rate you desire.

most likely yes. I don't play quake. COme get some in F.E.A.R. MP and we'll see what's up (ask Bulsajo and SirFink - they have experienced daddy's fury and didn't live to talk smack).
