this closely follows a recent thread.

since i arrived in korea 9 months ago, i've done more than my fair share of whining about the quality of korean music. last month i figured i should shut up and seek out the good

over the past few weeks i've downloaded 60+ albums and listened to almost every song. the best 21 i have assembled onto one mixed cd: diamonds in the ROK: a compilation of standout tracks from the republic of korea.

it sounds like many people are interested in k-music, so i really want to share this cd with anyone who wants it. for now you can download it from me via soulseek (my username is tactlessdiner). once i figure out how to use the clubbox ill stick em on there too. and i even have some that i will mail directly to your house anywhere in korea. but because demand will likely exceed supply, a contest in order! (see below)

i've striven to be selective in choosing only songs that i would actually buy if i were back home. while there are a ton of excellent metal, emo, and hip-hop songs out there, this album mostly focuses on the indie side of things -- though it does encompass some of these other genres. you'll also find lee hyori's infamous copyright infringement, but you'll just have to keep guessing whether its inclusion into such a stellar lineup is ironic or out of earnest admiration.

also: i am still very much a newbie at korean music, so there are some oldies, plus ive missed a bunch of potentially awesome bands that ive yet to fully get into -- 언니네 이발관 (sister's barbershop), 전자양, 잠 (zzzaam), 재주소년, and more maybe a best-of 2.0 one day?

ROBT.

CONTEST 1: Name the best movie whose title includes all 5 letters in the word Korea. The hitch: one submission per person. Good luck.

i've listened to bluedawn extensively. too similar to so many korean light, airy ballads.

hyori's track may be blatantly derivative, but it does kick. not too many korean pop songs are as beat-centric.

Movie Title: Wilbur Wants To Kill Himself (I'm trying not to make this a theme - really)

--------------------------------

Looks like a great disk. I have to admit a sneaky affection for Sugar Donut's Loser. I'd have added some Han Young Ae and maybe Loveholic, but tastes differ. That's what makes it interesting.

Even if I don't win, thanks for putting this together and making it available to people. Or, if you want, listen to my Turkish music on gang ah jee's "one song" thread, and if you like it, I'll make up a CD to trade you.

--------------------------------

Bonus Edit: My movie title contains each letter of Korea only one time!

If I submit an actual Korean film do I get extra credit?
If so Barking Dogs Never Bite (플란다스의 개) is my pick.

All those MP3 players on every Koreans' head, and I wonder what crap they are listening to on those things...

...why don't Koreans read? You can go to almost any city in the world, and on the subway find lots of readers, like half the people on the NYC subway are reading something...here, I can go days without ever seeing a person reading the newspaper on the subway...just mindlessly taking photos of themselves or playing fon-games, or just staring and blinking.

I see people reading on the subway everyday, especially in the morning. (This has nothing to do with the thread and should be ignored.)
