this poll is intended for public school teachers.
what percentage of your students actually care about learning English? i think in my second grade high school classes, it's about 15%. in my first grade classes, it's about 25%.
note that i don't mean "what % are good at English". |

what percentage of kids care about anything
They see very little need for it most of the time, so I bet high. Only the ones who understand how or why it is used, or the ones who are just good at it (or interested in it) really care. |

Wow, so far I'm batting by far the highest at just over 50% (maybe I'm just deluded). If the question were 'what % are concerned enough that they're willing to learn in an effective way that's completely foreign to the teaching methods they're used to' it would be far smaller. But generally it's good enough that if I'm doing a handout with them enough will actually be doing the work that I can concentrate on the few who aren't and actually make them do it whether they want to or not. If it were something like 'who would like to do extra work on English with me during CA day instead of dance club / art / etc.' it would only be around 10%, but at least in most of my classes most of the students are paying attention most of the time. I teach everything from grade 1 MS to grade 3 HS and the % who've given up on English increases each year, even though grade 2 and 3 MS classes can be the most difficult to control. By HS, however, there are some in every class who are genuinely concerned about learning and improving their English and are thankful to have me at the school. Maybe I'm just very lucky that way. |

'not sure why you think public school teachers and haggie teachers wouldn't share the same experience.
i teach at both a haggie and an elementary school, and my observation is the same in both situations. at the elementary school, out of a class of 20, i have 4 or 5 students that care. at the haggie, out of a class of 7, there's at least 2.

based on this given, i think my vote of 20 to 30% speaks well of Korean students in general. |
