Hi,
I'm going to enter on an E2 visa and I wonder if the customs\immigration might have anything to say about my Anti-Depression medications that I'm bringing?
Naturally, my school doesn't know I'm taking these and I don't want them to find out.

| I've carried mine back and forth across the border with me-- no problems. I've even had my parents send refills. |

My mother insists on creatively smuggling the pills every time she sends them, and although it's always fun to sort through the useless items she includes to camoflage it, I wonder whether it's necessary. Does anyone know what the law actually is?
Also, she mislabelled a package this week, and I had to go several days without the pills, resulting in unpleasant side-effects, so...
If I had to, would I be able to purchase Venlafaxine in Korea? How many pharmacies would carry that kind of thing? Does anyone have any experience filling prescriptions (assuming I could wangle one from a doctor)? |

I've also gone through customs with anti-depressants many a time, no problems and no questions asked.
As far as getting this kind of medication, a local clinic doctor might be a little reluctant to prescribe them to a foreigner. That was my case when I first got here and my prescription ran out, the local doctor even told me that it wasn't available in Korea, the doctor also went as far as call my school to inform them of my inquiry (no doctor-patient privacy here!). I did know that the meds I was on were available here because I called the manufacturer and inquired about it. I found a "neuro-psychiatric" clinic (don't let the name scare you) in Daejeon and after a 20 minute chat with the doctor was out of there with my prescription. |

Not for me. Easy as can be. Any "Nae Gwa" (internal medicine clinic) has worked for me. They usually give only 30 days' worth but not a problem. Int'l clinics may give more, but cost more too. |

Venlafaxine (Effexor) really is a bitch to come off, I had the worst withdrawal of my life on that shit, much worse than sleeping pills or Xanax.
From Wiki:
Sudden discontinuation of venlafaxine has a high risk of causing potentially severe withdrawal symptoms.[19] The high risk of withdrawal symptoms may reflect venlafaxines short half-life.[17] Missing even a single dose can induce discontinuation effects in some patients.[6] Discontinuation is similar in nature to those of SSRIs such as Paroxetine (Paxil or Seroxat).
Oldschool meds like Prozac or Zoloft are much easier to withdraw as they stay in your system for ages. So if you're worried about your supply you could switch your meds. They all work similarly anyway and the older ones are cheaper and probably eaasier to come buy. Zoloft (Sertraline) was the one that worked for me when I needed it.
Thankfully I don't have this problem anymore so no buying insanely expensive placebos for me. Effexor was a placebo for me as it didn't work as I got worse in the long term.
And no these meds tend to enhance the effect of alcohol, so you'll get drunk far quicker than normal.
Was this doctor chosen by your school? If not how did he get the school's details? |
