I need a good grammar reference book; the bible of all grammar books.

Anyone know any that they care to recommend?

You can download a FREE grammar book from TEFL Boot Camp. It is written in a lighthearted way - with some graphics - but is also fairly comphrehensive.

The link is at the bottom of this webpage:

I wouldn't call it the "Bible", but it is pretty d*mn good.

The most complete grammar book for teachers would be M. Celce-Murcia and D. Larsen-Freeman's The Grammar Book (2nd ed.). It covers all aspects of grammar, with both theoretical and practical discussion. If you want a book that just tells you what to think and do or one that is only focused on practice, this will be too much.

understanding and using english grammar (azar) is unparalleled in its layout and explanations, though the example sentences are often boring. good for self-study, for teachers to take pages from, or for advanced learners.

grammar in use (murphy) is less complete, but has excellent design -- one page of rules, one of exercises. the exercises aren't always that challenging, though. it's best as a textbook to use in class every day (especially at the intermediate level) and then supplement.

intermediate grammar (bland) is also quite a tome that has especially detailed rules and that covers the social use of many grammar points. however, it is better suited to in-class situtations where partnerwork is involved as there are many activities that involve using the grammar points in dialogues with classmates. quite excellent in its communicative approach, not too good for self-study.

That looks really good. I must confess to being mediocre at advanced grammar. This will help a lot.
