Does Korea have "progressive schools" (ie., schools that are more liberal minded that focus more on creativity and free thinking and less on structure and teaching to the test?)
Are any of these schools subsidised by the state? |

| Yea, those would be hogwans. No standards, few rules and outsider teachers excited about enlightenment. |

Yes, I work at one. It is an alternative education school system. They are currently working on government subsidizing... My school is sort of on the spiritual side, but we have other locations specializing in creativity etc. For instance as a teacher I am not just teaching facts or a subject, we are encouraged to promote project based learning. Its pretty complicated and has taken me AGES to understand i.e. already have to compare and contrast normal Korean school and culture to my school.
Unfortunately you will probably find that most of them do not pay well, unless they have deep pockets, because they are not funded by the government. Technically I have been told these schools are "illegal" but I think this is mistranslated meaning.
But, progressive schools are around...you have to look for them. I am not sure about a listing per se, but I could find out if you are seriously interested in an answer to your question. |
