| After my stint in Korea, I'm thinking of Ottawa as a new hometown. Anyone lived there? Opinions? |

yeah, i lived there for 5 years. it's a charming city. no surfing though, so your avatar might be upset. the summers, falls and springs are beautiful. the gatineau mountains are all a bus ride away if you're a nature freak. the downtown --byward market-- offers all the dancing/drinking/shopping you might want to do. lots of live music there and in a place called "the glebe", across the canal.
it's plenty bi-cultural, as the city is divided between anglophiles and francophiles.
the canal in the summer is a perfect place to burn one down for the afternoon... ahhh, fond memories.
the winter, on the other hand, is farking cold. sometimes gets down to -25C. your 코물 freezes to your face. but there are plenty of winter related activities as well, such as the ice carvings on parliament hill, the skating on the rideau canal, the eating of beaver tails.
give 'er. ottawa's nice. |

I lived there for also about 5 years. Couldn't wait to get
back to the west coast. No beaches, no mountains and
everyone is a civil servant (servile simpleton). The people
are just not as laid back and friendly as the west coast.
And yes, the winters BITE. If you want to know where all
your tax dollars end up it is Ottawa. Museums, galleries,
monumets etc. But it still sucks big time.

As far as Holy Cities go, Ottawa is second only to Bundang. And I'm not just saying that because I was born there. |

I was there 5 years also... good stuff: skating/running on the canal in the winter, easy employment with the gov't if you are bilingual and willing to be an admin(though it's through an agency, not permanent), friendly (IMO) people, gorgeous hiking in Gatineau, nice lakes to swim in in the summer, clean city, great public transit system... I loved the place.
I've also lived on the West Coast... loved it there too.
Oh, and bonus points for the Cat House. Double bonus points for games of Ultimate or soccer on the front lawn of Parliament Hill. |

I'd never heard it was so divided. Can francophones be anglophiles and anglophones be francophiles or is that frowned upon. |

i grew up in the ottawa area, and lived there for 12 years. i like it, but it's dull and i won't live there again. it's really pretty, good for cyclists, hikers and runners, can be difficult job-wise if you're not bilingual, many people are. more uptight than i'd like, which is one of the reasons i moved to bc. government town, roll up the streets after dark, especially in the winter, most live music passes it by in favour of toronto or montreal. good place to settle down and raise kids i guess... though i've head that the meth has gotten bad there recently. but i guess you could say that about any city in north america now...

francophones are closet anglophiles and viceversa. the english-speaking community eats poutine only behind closed doors and the french-speaking community listens to led zeppelin only on their ipods.
the division is exactly half. the francophiles command the areas between laurier and parliament hill. the anglophiles dominate sandy hill and the glebe. the canal is neutral. |

| I lived in Ottawa for 2 years. Great hiking in the Gatineau's. It is a really picturesque city. Great place if you're married with 2.2 children. Boring as hell if you're single, though. The good news is that it's only 2 hours down the road to party central........Montreal. |

Ottawa is situated where it should be, about halfway between Montreal & Toronto. That makes it half as good as Montreal and half as bad as Toronto. |

| I live in Ottawa now. Please feel free to PM me with specific questions.. or ask them here, whatever. I like it here. Its pretty cultural and clean. Theres a little bit of everything without its being too busy or spread-out. I agree that it gets really cold here in the winter. Good public transit, by the way, if you dont have a car. |

I had 5 decent years there. There were cool places to hang, great restaurants and a good arts scene. I don't know why some on this thread said it was boring.
Winters were long and harsh but summers were extraordinary.
I'd move back. |

One of the few cities that has skating as a means of transportation in winter.
I skated to university. Skated downtown. I once went out drinking and they took my skates on me. "you can have them back when you leave" |
