| Who comes up with this crapola? Land of Morning Calm my ass. Hardly a morning passes when I'm not awakened by loud neighbours, slamming doors, the guy upatairs coughing up a lung, those godammed vegetable truck jurks, car horns etc. Then when I get to school I have to listen to announcements yelled over the intercom at 10,000 decibles. When the kids arrive in class the noise truly begins. Then after school I get to go to the local supermarket and listen to three different characters screaming at me over the microphone. I get home and turn on the TV only to endure extremely loud Korean talking on TV (especially Korean voice overs of Western shows). The door slamming, horking and snorting can be heard throughout the evening. On not a few occasions I've been awakened by these noises the moment I fall asleep, or worse, at three in the morning. The only thing that keeps me going is knowing that in the morning I get to wake up in the Land of Morning Calm. True bliss I tell ya. |

This is exactly the same at my school, I just don't understand why it has to be so loud. |

Every day for the past two weeks I've been getting woken up at around 9:30 am by consistent beating of a hammer and drilling. It's so loud that it sounds like someone is in the next room working on things. The cleaning lady walked by today as I was in the hall trying to determine the origin so I could steal them hammer and smash someone's head in, and she explained to me it's coming from the floor above me. Long story short, almost every resident on the adjacent floors has complained. Management doesn't care. The work continues until 2:00. I said, why can't it START at two??? She just laughed, like I had said something crazy.
So every day I get to wake up with a headache. Oh, and before they start, the guy gets on a loudspeaker and gives an announcement about it.. twice. Absolute fucking madness.
There is nothing calm about this place ever. |

Actually, starting at 9:30 AM sounds pretty reasonable. |

It is incredibly reasonable. I've dealt with crochety neighbours around construction sites griping about the noise starting at 7 a.m., which I agree is an understandable complaint. Especially on Saturdays. The worst, the biggest gripers, have been foreigners. Real self-important hot-shots, a few of them. Junior diplomats, business execs. If I'm there and they see me, they really get right in my face (because they don't speak Korean to harrass the crew) and start going off, vowing to call the police, demanding I give them my name & number, etc. Sometimes it's unavoidable to start hammering that early, but usually we just do it to piss people off. |

| Yeah, 9:30 is pretty good. Most people are working by then, so it doesn't really bother many. |

Yeah 9:30 is great if you discount the fact that not every person in the world is on the exact same schedule. As I said, many people have already complained, not just myself. Not everyone wants to hear banging and drilling in the morning.
Gee, I go to work at 8 am, so 9:30 sounds like a perfect time to bang on the walls and drill tile. Oh, I forgot that I'm not the only person on the planet. Welcome to ajeoshihood, fellas. |

Sounds more like welcome to your hakwon life.
So, if we consider every possibility, from day job to night shift, there is no suitable time.
If being an Ajoshi means not getting freaky about people working during perfectly reasonable daytime hours, then bring it on. However, with 2 kids, 2 cars, 2 jobs, a wife, a paid-for villa...yeah, I'm an ajoshi, and enjoying every minute. |

One thing you're missing from that list is class. Do you ever seen Guru bragging as much as you do? Congratulations, you have kids, a wife, a car, and a permanent residence in Korea. All things I do not want. I'm perfectly happy with my life, except when someone is drilling and banging on hammers in the morning..
Regardless of your mantra of reasonable work times, the point is that this thread was about "morning calm", and when the drilling and hammering is so loud that it literally gives me a headache, I do not consider it very calm.
If you have such a fulfilling life, then you can happily discount me from your existence and stop trying to impress me. |

Class. Right. You are indeed school on Sunday.
Sure Guru gloats, albeit more subtly than I, as does everyone from time to time. Do I care what Guru does that I don't? You seem to be projecting a touch here. I hardly think what I posted as gloating, as I am far from the only person here in such a position; I was simply qualifying my Adjoshihood.
Discount you? Oh, my...perish the thought! You are a tiny sliver of that happy life.
Now, anyone will agree that a 9:30 AM start to business is reasonable and completely acceptable, no matter how noisy the job at hand may be.
What is far more aggravating, and I think all will concur, regardless of their schedule, are the supermarket-in-a-bongo trucks. They kind of bug me even at noon. |

| 'land of morning calm' probably comes from the meaning of 朝鮮 (what korea was known as in the ancient times) and it literally means morning-fresh, but if you say 'the land of morning fresh' then it sounds like a laundry detergent or something ... |

| Only the Korean Tourist Board and it's TV wing, Arirang, still push that Land of the Morning Calm crap. |

Yep. From the wiki:
In 1392, a new dynasty established by a military coup revived the name Joseon (조선, 朝鮮). The Chinese characters were often translated into English as "morning calm," and Korea's English nickname became "The Land of the Morning Calm"; however, this interpretation is not often used in the Korean language, and is more familiar to Koreans as a back-translation from English. |
