Ummm...there are only a handful: Bennigan's, TGIF, VIP, Pizza Hut, Outback, the Mexican place...(It's more than most parts of the city have.)

Hongdae's much better for cheap(ish) Korean food for the kids from school to grab during their lunch break.

There are 2 Mexican restaurants, that Thai joint, and then the chain stuff out by the subway station, that Penang place, and...that's about it, really.

There's a unique steakhouse in Hongdae.

They serve bread with the meal, and you can get as much as you want without being charged.

There are a number of steaks, which seem a bit overpriced, but you can get coupons online and catch some lunch specials if you have time.

The whole place has a different theme than your average Korean restaurant and it's quite comfortable, though the seats are usually wooden and uncushoined.

I think it's called Outback. There might be a few more of those in Seoul.

There is now a 3rd mexican restaurant. Margaritas 2 just opened up.. not far from the front gate near the Sexy Bar that has the huge sign illuminating up the sky.

Plus a Thai restaurant 'Ko Sahn', a Greek restaurant 'Greek Joy', a Malaysian restaurant 'Penang'.. a large number of Chinese and Japanese restaurants everywhere. Lamb skewers are all the rage these days - and quite good.

There are also a number of Italian places.. Agio (sp?) being the most popular.. another really good Italian one across from the front gate not far from where mcdonalds use to be.

There is a spanish restaurant with paella that's pretty good.. its all the way down the little street that is across from US66 and goes towards the university.

There are also several of the chain restaurants like Seven Seasons (corrent title? - its a big salad bar buffet place).. TGIF, Outback, Pizza Hut, etc. A few Subway restaurants around as well. And a KFC.

Jenny's Kitchen is kind of like homemaid cafe-style food.. thats not bad and something different as well. Its like a coffee shop artistic like place you'd see around around the front gates of western universities with a fusion of food.

Please don't mention that place (Seven Springs). It's the ultimate bastardization of western food. My Outback mention was a joke, but at least Outback is tasty.

My girlfriend remarked that Seven Springs must have been started by some guys who just looked at photos of western food and tried to make what was in the picture without actually reading any recipes.

Horrible stuff.

DON'T GO THERE PEOPLE!!

The Indian restaurant near the Starbucks by the main gate that opened up is really good, too. They also have some really cheap lunch specials, and the cook, Amit, is a top-notch guy that studied in the States when he was younger.

Thai: http://66.102.7.104/search?q=cache:gMm-NbeBksgJ:times.hankooki.com/lpage/culture/200602/kt2006021620522165480.htm+%22Baan+Phuan%22+%22korea+times%22&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1

Spanish: http://times.hankooki.com/lpage/culture/200610/kt2006100420445865480.htm

There's an Indian/Nepali place opening soon about a five minute walk from Hongik subway exit #5 toward Sogyeo Elementary School. They'll open when the Nepali chef arrives.

Yeah, thats the paella I had.. good restaurant, good food. Service is a little slow (but faster than Casa Maya - the slowest service i've seen anywhere). Also, the Spanish food doesn't taste Korean.. so that was a very good thing!

There is also a Peruvian restaurant called 'Cusco'.. I haven't been to that one yet.. but hope to soon.

Cusco is OK. There are a variety of different South American foods available there. It's not really in Hongdae though, it's closer to Hapjeong station. The place next to the park near hongik uni's gate is OK and pretty good value for money, you can get curry, and some Indonesian eats there.

The Thai place is crap, if you want Thai go to Itaewon. Some of the Chinese restaurants are pretty good, the Japanese places are not very good, Kangnam is better for Japanese food.

A rest. named Teriyaki over by Jenny's is a decent Japanese fusion place.

Tony Roma's is pretty good. Go to their website and print out their cupon and receive 40% discounts on Mondays in November/06!!

I like Poe Phoa. It's a Vietnamese chain restaurant that is pretty decent. That's close to Exit 6~ one street in.

New York Fries is located behind the Coffee Bean accross from the Hongik U. gate. Pretty decent.

BTW, where are the Spanish and Peruvian rests. located?

I got a kick out of the sign in New York Fries. There is a huge maple leaf on the wall and it says something like "New York Fries: Made in Canada" or something to that effect.

The Spanish restaurant, El Plato, is down that alley ACROSS from US66. Its almost at the end of the alley (the alley that goes towards the university direction).

piatto:

nice italian restaurant, with good food and atmosphere.
the 4 course set dinners started at 15 000 with a thin crust pizza as the main. next set was 25000 with a steak. etc....

when walking towards hongik uni, turn right at the street before the body shop and the restaurant is next to the big white luxury singing room on the second floor.

mama mia:

wine bar/restaurant
i had the pad thai and calamari for 20 000 all in.
satisfied for the price, but again the atmosphere is chill so def. worth it.

location,....cant describe it. its next to aggio.
