I haven't yet seen a thread here on Dave's devoted to this exclusively, so i'm gonna start one now.

There's a LOT of what i find as really dumb ( i.e. "no brainer" ) stories that come out on the net & are generally played up in the media. More often than not i fail to see what the big idea is.

How about you? Do you find the media all too often covers events & "discoveries" that state the obvious? If so, post em' here ...

Job exposure to pesticide may raise cancer risk
Tue Nov 29,10:25 AM ET

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Daily on-the-job exposure to the pesticide diazinon appears to increase the risk of lung cancer and possibly other cancers, according to new findings from the US government-sponsored Agricultural Health Study, a project begun in 1993 to investigate the health effects of pesticides on farm families in Iowa and North Carolina.

By December 2002, 301 of 4,961 men with occupational exposure to diazinon had developed lung cancer compared with 968 of 18,145 with no occupational exposure to diazinon.

"We found evidence of an association of lung cancer and leukemia risk with increasing lifetime exposure days to diazinon," Dr. Michael C. R. Alavanja from the National Cancer Institute in Rockville, Maryland and colleagues report in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

The results were unchanged after adjusting for cigarette smoking, "suggesting that confounding due to smoking probably does not explain the elevated risks of lung cancer," the authors write.

Hey, listen up neurotic parents ... EVERYBODY does it !!!

Infant Masturbation Often Misdiagnosed
LiveScience Staff

LiveScience.com
Mon Dec 5,12:00 PM ET

Masturbation in infant girls sometimes leads to doctor visits because parents think the children have a movement disorder, a new study finds.

Don't worry, the researchers say. It's all natural and harmless.

In the study, researchers reviewed a dozen cases of young girls who were referred to pediatric movement disorder clinics between 1997 and 2002 for evaluation of episodic dystonic posturing, characterized by involuntary muscle contractions that force the body into abnormal movements and positions.

After sometimes invasive testing and medication, the neurologists discovered the symptoms were actually normal muscle contractions that accompany masturbation.

"Masturbation is a normal human behavior. It's not harmful to anybody," said study leader Jonathan Mink, Chief of Child Neurology at the University of Rochester Medical Center.

Loneliness Kills ... Study Shows
Robin Lloyd
Special to LiveScience

It's true—you might die of loneliness, but not until you're older.

In a new University of Chicago study of men and women 50 to 68 years old, those who scored highest on measures of loneliness also had higher blood pressure. And high blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart disease, the number one killer in many industrialized nations and number two the United States.

Lonely people have blood pressure readings as much as 30 points higher than non-lonely people, said the study leaders Louise Hawkley and Christopher Masi. Blood pressure differences between lonely and non-lonely people were smallest at age 50 and greatest among the oldest people tested.

Richard Suzman of the National Institute on Aging, which funded this research, said he was "surprised by the magnitude of the relationship between loneliness and hypertension in this well-controlled, cross-sectional study."

Nothing worse

The researchers separated loneliness out from depression, age, race, gender, weight, alcohol consumption, smoking, blood pressure medications, hostility, stress, social support and other factors.

When I opened www.msn.com today, I noticed the headlines saying "Turn off the TV and Hit the Books - Study says distractions diminish studies"

Uhhmmmm errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr I thought sooooooooo...........

Why do Americans suddenly discover useless research facts?

Anyway, here is the website for your interest hehe.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14014219/

Then the article opens like this:

Too many distractions get in way of learning
Multitasking makes it harder to remember knowledge later on, study finds

WASHINGTON - Your parents were right, don't study with the TV on.

Multitasking may be a necessity in today's fast-paced world, but new research shows distractions affect the way people learn, making the knowledge they gain harder to use later on.

The study, in Monday's Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, also provides a clue as to why it happens.
