They probably know this better than anyone else. But this is not exactly why they are running -- that is, they are not necessarily running for President.

One runs, stumps, gets some national attention, secures X votes, and then goes to the national convention to negotiate something (a policy statement on the platform, a position in the new govt up to and including the vice-presidency, etc.)

Everyone already knows it will probably be between five or six or so candidates: Hillary, Guliani, McCain, and others.
