Does anyone out there know if the job market is still hot in Alberta? Are people still walking off the streets and into jobs with ease?

Just thinking it might be an option for those of us going back to Canada soon.

Yes, very hot.

But alot of problems are becoming more prominent. Expensive housing is one. If you're buying a house, you are at least a couple years late. If you are renting, you will be paying a big chunk of your paycheck towards it.

If you wanna work in the pits, then you're SET. If you want any kind of construction job, no problem. If you want to work in a cafe or restaurant, you're sent.
If you want a public sector job (read: Teaching job), that is a HARD damn find. They're out there but don't assume on getting something in deadmonton or calgry.

In terms of run of hte mill office jobs, you have completely got me.
Oh yeah...and if you are in some kinda trade, then damn, you are golden!

Everyday, I hear and see reports saying that production jobs (construction, etc.) are easy to find and pay well, but that housing is impossible to find. If you don't have somewhere to live before you go (i.e. friends or family), then you probably won't find anything for a reasonable price, if you can find anything at all that is!!! I'm not joking about that last part ("bring a tent" that's probably good advice).

It's going to be great (at least for temporary labour jobs) until the US solves its oil addiction problem. Probably after a few measures (more people drive hybrids, people start to conserve, an alternate energy source is found) the whole industry will collapse in ruins.

Alberta is not a good place if you want a nice career. There's really only one industry there, and every other job only exists to support it somehow.

There are reoccuring "interest" pieces about companies that have it tough and cannot find workers.

I hear you can rent a shed for 200$ a month, they'll even throw in a bed, dresser, microwave.

I am in Alberta now, and the shortage is acute. In my town, McDonald's closes as 6pm due to labour shortages.

Carpenters in Calgary earn 72$/hr now. Riggers earn in the 40-50's with OT. The economy is on fire. Front page of the EJournal everyday.

But, if you are like me and not good with your hands or too keen on low-income service jobs then the banking sector and government are also scouting. Be prepared to start at the very bottom (this because with very high attrition comes fast promotions in an attempt to keep labour in the firm and more entry-level positions ---- but the flip side is that you can expect to move up quickly).

Teaching, for some reason, is apparently the opposite.

Don't believe the stuff about housing. Just don't live in DOWNTOWN Calgary or Edmonton. In Red Deer, Camrose, Med.Hat and Loyd you can get apts for 7-800/month for 1bedroom. There is some vacancy. The wages reflect the cost of living. You can find good jobs in these smaller cities. Med Hat is apparently a wonderful place to live.

But, it is horribly cold here. I was in Korea for 2.5 years, Istanbul for 6 mos and now I live in Singapore. I totally forgot how cold cold can be. It is really cold. -20 tonight with blowing snow. I feel trapped in the parents house here.
