I'm considering throwing over the traces and going somewhere warm to kick back for an extended period of time. (I'm struggling with my desire for instant gratification vs another W10 million by the end of the contract to play with. My decision changes hourly. )
So...
Who knows a cool place in the Philippines to hang out?
Cool =
a. The less spent on housing, the longer I can stay.
b. Indoor plumbing is a plus. I'm not the camp out on a beach type. Been there, done that. No more, thanks.
c. A variety of food is good.
d. Terrorists looking for American heads, not good.
e. Other foreigners, optional.
f. Decent view of sunsets is good.
Information, advice, cautions all welcome. |

Thanks Mr. (?) 782,
This is exactly the kind of information I was hoping to hear.
Mostly I just want to spend some quiet time. Try some writing. I'm not looking to work, but a couple of hours a day would be OK. Just enough to pay the rent or food (not both). |

Finish your contract!
Vietnam is nice too. If you go to a smaller city along the coast you can live dirt cheap and hang out on the beach everyday. It is basically the same as the Philippines. |

| As an honored and highly respected Phillipines scholar, I would recommend Cebu. I heard from travel agents that it's nice. |

Thanks for the advice, Green Tea. I've considered Vietnam. I think I'm tired of living in a country where communication is an obstacle.
I wrote my resignation Tuesday, but it's still sitting on my desk. No final decision yet. |

| I was also going to recommend Boracay. It's beautiful, but expensive compared to the rest of the Philippines. You'de be camping out on the beach! |

| My vote would be to finish the contract and get your money, then head to Cebu. Been there three times and it's quite a nice place. But it SUCKS if you don't have money. |

I know it, I know it. The practical side of me agrees. I could live very well for a whole year on the extra $10-15 thousand dollars I'll have if I can survive till next Sept.
The other side of me, the instant gratification side, says to seize the day. Life is short and at my stage of life growing rapidly shorter.
The trick is, as I see it: In the scheme of things, given a finite life span, is it worth another 10 months of near-misery and depression? Does being really unhappy for a year balance out being 'maybe' happy some place else?
(The job isn't TERRIBLE. It just isn't satisfying. And that isn't their fault.)
And TECO's pictures are not making me feel more responsible and cautious. |

| If you have enough cash cash saved up to survive for a while, just go. No reason to be unsatisfied when you could be having a great time I say. |

If you have enough saved to go and kick back in the Phils for a stretch, go and do it. Instead of saving 10 million won, aim for 5 million and then cut out with some cash to have fun with.
Korea's not going anywhere - neither is Taiwan or Japan. There'll be plenty of Asian EFL jobs waiting for you when you're ready to come back. |

EXACTLY!
Take the vacation.. follow your heart.. do what YOU want to do. Chances are once you do what you want to do.. you'll get that out of your system.. then you can save up the 10 million won later..
As to where to go in the Philippines. Cebu is just about right. A lot of live music, large shopping malls - great air-conditioned escapes from the heat, good restaurants around, and everything very affordable.
I love to just hang around the Philippines cities because I can do anything and everything I would just like at home.. but don't have to have any financial stress about anything whatsoever - just do whatever you feel like doing at anytime. its great.
Plus its easy to hop on the boat to Bohol or other places.. fairly centrally located in the Visayas. |
