For the money, and if you have the visa to make it legal, Kangnam is the place to teach. A hakwon, though, is still a hakwon. Some people, of coure, do still teach privates, regardless of the legalities involved. If you're going to work for an institute and try to do some privates, I'd say go to either Kangnam (Apkujong, PangBae, Yoksam, Kangnam Station) or downtown in Jeongro. Any point on line 7 up Kangnam way wouldn't be bad, either. Money town.
Best areas to work at a hakwon? Jeongro, Shincheon, Ewha, Hongdae...take your pick.
Best place to live? Probably Hongdae hands down. Not cheap, though. For value, I'd go with Itaewon, especially since the subway connects you easily to points all over Seoul. The area near Ewha Station isn't bad to live, but it's a bit run down. Good proximity to Shincheon and Hongdae, though. I have yet to see a neighborhood that can compare. Then again, I absolutely hate highrise apartments, which is why I would steer clear of Mokdong. Chasing privates? Then Mokdong isn't bad. Boring, but not bad money-wise
Kangnam, in my opinion, is congested and bogged down with people trying to look monied and cool. Too much attitude, too much traffic, and too much rent. Even if the institute is giving you housing, I'd pass. |
