I'm bored today, I have a few more gigs on my iPod to fill. I'm looking for something new to listen to.

What would you personally go buy?

Okay, here's a few eclectic choices for you, most of them are oldies but goodies.

Frank Zappa's Hot Rats and Jazz From Hell.

Miles Davis's Bitches (female dog) Brew

Anything by Bachman Turner Overdrive and The Guess Who

If you're willing to take risks: French-Canadian music

Jaune by Jean-Pierre Ferland and any album by Harmonium or Offenbach (progressive and blues-rock)

You might also want to try music from the Maritimes: Sloan (earlier stuff was 'grunge', now British-invasion type stuff), Hank Snow ("country music hall of famer" and "the guy introduced Elvis Presley to Colonel Tom Parker"), Great Big Sea...

Dancehall '69, some great reggae music. The songs are high quality and have some very unusual effects you might not find in later recordings.

A couple of guys have suggested jazz and Davis albums in particular.

The latest to my jazz c.d. collection is available in Korea and quite good: Verve's Grammy Winners. Award-winning classic releases like Ella's Cheek to Cheek 1958 Grammy for Best Female Vocal Performance; Stan Getz-Gilberto's The Girl from Ipanema 1964 Grammy for Best Instrumental Jazz Performance from the Album of the Year; Count Basie, Shirley Horn, Charlie Parker, etc.

Nelly Furtado's Loose (2006) is funky yet pop with catchy hits like Maneater and Promiscuous but much better lesser hyped Afraid, All Good Things, and my personal fav Te Busque. She has a nice blend of her Portuguese heritage with contemporary pop, providing a fresh, edgy feel.

Anything by anyone on Warp Records or DFA Records. And check out Jamie Lidell, who is on Warp Records. He's a modern-day Michael Jackson but he's white (I guess MJ is too...) and records his own beats. And Beck's new album is really really HOT.

Miles Davis? It's pretty good for insomnia; I'll say that much.

I'd go with

Powerslave - Iron Maiden
Skylarking - XTC
The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway - Genesis (Back when Genesis was interesing)
Strangers in the Night - UFO
Where Have all the Merrymakers Gone? - Harvey Danger

Have fun and give me an update if you feel like it.

The clear choice here is Lordi - The Arockalypse.

1. They're from Finland. (I'm not sure why that's important, but it seems like a valid reason.)

2. It's impossible to listen to them without giggling. (Laughter is healthy, right?)

3. They stole their outfits from Gwar.

4. Despite all this, they still won the Eurovision song contest.

Great new albums:

Sufjan Stevens - The Avalanche (only if you already have Illinois and are craving more)

TV on the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain

Yo La Tengo - I am not Afraid of you and I will Beat your Ass

Decemberists - The Crane Wife (but I know you already know this one)

Death Cab for Cutie - Plans (I can't recommend their live show as being worth the time and money unless they somebody like Ted Leo is opening for them, but this is a very good album).
