Science projects bought, police say
A researcher at the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, Kim Min-gyu, was detained yesterday on charges of selling some of his inventions and research papers to parents of high school students for use in science fairs. According to police, Mr. Kim charged parents of his proteges 50 million won ($53,100) for the data, telling them that with prizes in hand, their children could easily get into a prestigious college. The authorities added that they were also investigating three parents and eight teachers who had been listed as advisers for the students' competition entries. Police said they believed Mr. Kim had "borrowed" their names for listings as research advisers. Police said the scheme netted Mr. Kim 158 million won, and added that his daughter and son had also won college seats with the help of resume-boosters based on his work.
