I'm getting a couple of students ready for a speech contest tomorrow and was going over things with them. 'Make sure you have your full uniform' I reminded them and then asked 'You both have a proper pair of shoes? Nice shoes? Not sneakers, OK?' and then asked them 'and you can wear proper socks?'

Looks of confusion ensued. 'You know, not ankle socks' I showed them - 'socks like mine, not what you're wearing now'.

'Oh no, teachuh, I no have' one of them said.

'You mean you only have ankle socks?' I asked. Yes, yes, only ankle socks, she nodded.

Now, she's not from a poor family and has lots of nice stuff. But no real socks? I just can't get over how all over Korea right now there are kids walking home in a dorky blazer, tie, vest, and skirt / trousers and tattered old sneakers and ankle socks and that's people's idea of dressing really smart for school. What's the point of even having formal uniforms if that's the case. Tonight at the supermarket maybe I'll buy a pack of cheap girls' dress socks so that at least my students will match each other and won't look like slobs tomorrow when you look down at their feet. Or perhaps they don't sell them here?

Be patient. One of those trucks with the Gigadecibel loudspeakers is the sock truck.

I believe that I have the honour of the world's largest non-matching sock collection. Thankfully I did laundry on the weekend and have a matching pair for today.

BTW, the town's biggest supermarket did indeed have one style of girls' dressy socks.
