The last week or so has seen some increased activity on the part of the logging companies and authorities in the Weld valley.
I can't believe the pirate ship is gone.
I've got some activist buddies who have made me aware that measures are being taken to counter these actions. Hopefully they can at least delay the destruction.
The situation down in the apple isle is screwed up. |

| What's the alternative? Paper made from the Indonesian rain forest? From Canadian old growth forests? Please don't say hemp. You gotta clear forests to make space to grow hemp. |

When will computer discs finally replace paper?
i have no objection to cutting trees, so long as the same area is devoted to tree planting, and the forest is managed on a sustainable, rotational basis. if they're taking everything all at once then that is just insane. |

No not hemp and not other old growth forests. I'm aware that there is a need for pulp but chopping down a resource like the old growth forests in Tasmania for 15 AUD per tonne is extremely shortsighted. This is especially the case when the pine plantations are more than capable of fulfilling the need for both supply and jobs in Australia. I'm not aware of the situation in other countries but in Australia there is no reason why plantation farming cannot take the place of old growth desecration. The only real reasons are the political ones companies like Gunns are exploiting. There's more profit margin clearfelling trees already there than growing new ones but they are basically stealing a national resource for short term gains. John Howard has recently stated that he is behind ending this form of total clearing...hopefully he makes good on the statement. |

Not use as much paper, invest in greater recycling technology.
More importantly, don't replace an old growth forest with 1 type of treee that will never reach adulthood. |

People use an awful lot of paper, so much so that recycling only creates a dent in demand. Again, demand surpasses the growth rate of newly planted trees. It's probably a losing battle. |

Bah, the entire thing is fucked. Today i saw in the newspaper where the US economy was described as 'sustainable' because it continued to grow
More economic growth is not sustainable. Period. |

More specifically, it destroys habitats and increases erosion, which mudies rivers (thus reducing the amount of oxygen in them, which affects the survival of fish eggs).  |
